Spike's last good film?

Definitely his last hit. What the heck happened after this?

He's "hit or miss" for me, too.

If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.

Spike is a Man who operates better (IMO) with a small but effective budget. He did well with 25th Hour which was a decent budget for what it was and here again with Inside Man, which had what, a $50mil budget or so? Other than that, he's always been in the $10mil and under range. It allows for him to have control and make the film a TRUE Spike Lee Joint. I actually think Inside Man doesn't feel like a Spike film, it has some moments of course but overall, you can tell Grazer didn't want too much of certain "elements" so to say. From 1990-1998, that's my Spike Lee, personally. Mo Betta Blues, Malcolm X, Jungle Fever, Crooklyn, Clockers, He Got Game... THOSE are films that I pop in when I'm in the Spike Lee mood. The Stories, the Cinematography, the cuts, editing... Basically the VISUAL tools that he uses to tell his story. Summer of Sam and 25th Hour had those as well. Here, he felt like a Hired Gun BUT he delivered. Since this, he's made *beep* imo, including ChiRaq which an embarrassment. Sometimes Directors get too big for their own good and it doesn't work out. Spike has such an important voice but it needs freedom. Bigger Budgets usually don't allow this.
