I totally agree. I remember being really upset when I first saw this movie for that reason. I don't know if you plan to watch the sequel, but all I will say is the ending to that movie isn't much better than the one we got here.
"What's all this gobbledygook here?" "They're words."

I did see the sequel. It also indicated that not all the mutants were dead.
In fact they more or less do it in every mutant movie, which really *isses me off.

Every horror movie does that nowadays. They are almost never definitively over. They always have to have that twist ending where good never triumphs over evil. It would be a breath of fresh air to see the monster(s) being killed, the protagonists being triumphant, and nothing left open to interpretation for once. With some movies, dark endings are more suitable; but they should have a purpose, not just to have an excuse to make a sequel.
I agree that it was disappointing to see a mutant looking through binoculars, but comic aside (I've never read it and honestly didn't even know there was one), what makes you think that they didn't escape? It would definitely suck to survive all of that, then realize you're not exactly safe yet. But couldn't they have walked back to the gas station, gotten a car and gotten away? Or once they were back on the main road, maybe they were picked up by a passing car or something. Since they never showed what exactly did happen, it's pretty much open to interpretation.
I think the survived. The last shot was to show that "the hills still have eyes" and to set up for a sequel, but come on--the mutants in this weren't stupid. I'm sure they decided to hang back and let them go after seeing what they did to the other, for fear of their own lives.

I mean, look at the original Hills Have Eyes 2. The mutants obviously survived and they let the family go and somehow remained undiscovered despite being reported. What makes you think the same didn't happen here?
I thought the ending was *beep* up too, but honestly, I like *beep* up endings. I hate that the bad guys always lose in most american movies. It's stupid.
I thought they never showed the bald headed woman/mutant die? just suggesting possibly that obviously there probably are a few more mutants alive
I don't think its that crazy that they would have a pair of binoculars and watch the family as they left even if just out of curiosity or possibly concern for their own lives
we also saw the kid-mutants in one house, could have been them, you never know, its very vague someone simply looking through binoculars
first reaction is that its another dangerous mutant but it could be any mutant (and clearly there are varying types and attitudes as far as they go)
