Why was there a lion on the base?

I didn't expect much from this flawed movie but I can't make any sense of that scene. Anyone care to explain??

In real life the Lafayette Escadrille had TWO lions, named Soda and Whiskey.

To elaborate a little, officers in the British (and European) military were typically of the upper crust. It was often their province or responsibility to house and feed the troops (at least the junior officers) with their own money or money solicited for the unit, which was less of an issue with infantry in the field. But the nature of aviation (away from daily combat) was such that villas and castles were rented or otherwise procured, along with cooks and often very good food and other amenities. Which could include mascots like lions or tigers.

Wasn't specifically aware that Americans followed the model, but doesn't surprise me either.

And Lafayette Escadrille was of course under French command, so it might have been a joint effort to make things posh, as they say.

So Rawlings and the crew are touring their quarters/the beautiful chateau. Suddenly a lion comes out! "Rawlings look out!" "Get this thing off me! Get... get."

Suddenly Cassidy whistlers, "WHISK! Get off him."

L.T. Giroux,"Whiskey is our squadron mascot. Follow me."

Pretty simple

There were lion cubs in this movie so ignorant people could tell each other it was historically accurate.

Whiskey and Soda were the only historical facts in it. They also happened to deliver the two most convincing performances. And if you know anything about the First War in the air, the lions also provide the only believable excitement and suspense.

Why wouldn't they be there?

There is a brief documentary about their real-life mascots, two. It is all based in reality.
