A couple of major flaws

While the scenery and digital effects are quite good (although not completely convincing) in this movie did anyone spot two major flaws that for me made this film unrealistic.?

1. The aircraft engines were dummy radials(static cylinders) rather than the rotary Clerget and Gnome types (with rotating cylinders) used in the actual aircraft of the period.

2. The sound created by the replica engines as a result was not realistic at all !.

By the way the comment by the producer and director that the Bristol fighter was the only one flying at the time is incorrect there is at least one other in New Zealand.

Not knowing much about planes, no, I didn't notice anything wrong, but I do understand that it could bother an airplane fan. I don't think such films should be watched when you know much about the topic yourself, you're likely to hurt yourself. I always cringe at little things in documentaries and movies about the Middle Ages, and I'm not even half as knowledgeable as historians of that period. ;)

Was there a purpose to James Franco losing his Texas accent during the film or did he just forget?

That is why when they cast an actor in films they should make sure that they can actually do that particular accent for long periods of time.

Yes, that should be requirement no. 1. Working 12+ hour days would play no effect on how well your voice sounds much less if you accent is, at all times, convincing.

Yes it should be requirement number 1! I still feel that if ok the main character has to be someone who is a no name actor and can do the job better than someone who will pack the movie houses in due to him being the hottest star right now. The problem is the actor who is well known may not be able to play the part very well or like Mr. Franco did could not keep the southern accent up throughout the whole movie.

If the no name actor could do a better job then why not do that then? All you have to do is compensate to be honest and use other actors to fill other roles that can help carry the no name actor to look better. That is what I would do as a director to be honest with you.

the entire movie, and thats all you could come up with for flaws?

how about 90% of everything else not mentioned is pure flaw?

That was a minor flaw ok about the movie that I could think of. I am sure there are other flaws if I rewatched the movie that I could come up with but I will leave it as that.

At the beginning of the film it stated that it was inspired by true events. Yeah, the fact that there was a WWI was the only true event.

That's really exaggerated. The escadrille Lafayette existed, so did the fact that young Americans volunteered to join it, and at least Skinner is based on an actual character (don't know about the others).

I know, I exaggerated. It's really, really rare that I dislike a film, but this is one of those rare times. It was cast with just too many beautiful people and that made it a turn-off for me.

Sorry it was a turnoff for you Quigley...I loved it!
In spite of the MAJOR flaw that I could SEE the planes' line-of-fire...not gonna happen...

I found the 'air' sequences more 'dynamic' than any I've seen, in spite of previously mentioned fact...

Sorry, diss me, call me a loser...but I LOVED IT!

Some of the story for this movie could have been Hollywood adding some things to the actual story to make it seem interesting you know.

No I do not know how much NO MANS LAND was cratered from the artillery. That is not good that no pilot could land the plane without getting killed.

Lafayette Escadrille was a French fighting unit composed of American pilots. I'm not aware of any black pilots in the Lafayette Escadrille, but there were two black pilots, notably the American Eugene Bullard, who flew for the French.

Black fighter pilot in 1917? They barley accepted them in WW2 , (Tuskegee's red tails.)

Not all of no mans land was completely pockmarked with craters. More than a couple of aviators in the Great War landed in no mans land for forced landings, picking up a fellow downed airman and on occasion - getting a souvenir from a downed enemy aircraft to authenticate the victory for confirmation.

It appeared to me that some German infantry in the film were actually wearing WWII era Wehrmach helmets.

In the goofs section, it is stated that, the Germans, at that time, had done away with their spiked(Pickelhaube)helmets in the trenches. The replacement helmets came in 1916 and resemble the WWII style, however I didn't realize if the newer updated WWII Wehrmach helmets were used. Since most of the WWI helmets were ordered destroyed after the war, I suppose they used whatever was handy to make the film.

Yes, the iconic helmets were first introduced in WWI. Like in this photo.

Captures perfectly the meeting of ages that was WWI - the pre-modern horse and lance and modern gas-mask, rifle and helmet.

This movie is quite accurate in most parts (I studied the Great War and WWII for years)
Of course there are flaws but to say 90% of it is? you're retarded at best.

Who really cares about them; just watch the movie and Enjoy; why all the BS ? its only a movie; not something that is going to effect your entire life !!!

Is there any war movie that's anywhere near accurate? War movies are always going to be largely inaccurate and never tell the whole story.

Do yourselves a huge favor and never, ever try to defend the accuracy of this film. Ever.

This thing is fifteen minutes of movie interrupting a solid string of factual errors.
