'My daddy was a slave'

Am I the only one who didn't follow the Eugene character's logic when he said his father was a slave?

Just looking at him, he would have been conceived around 1890, so...his father was a freedman perhaps? No subsequent occupation to speak of?

Just wondered if I'm missing something.

I'd assume he just meant his dad was born under slavery, not that he was recently working as a slave.

Correct. It's likely he meant that his father was born before 1865.

It just means that his father was born a slave and had been a slave for an unspecified amount of time, so his father was a slave. When you'll die, will the people necessarily associate you with the very last occupation you will have had? Not necessarily.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefsī²
