Playing with expectations? {spoilers}

Bubble might seem after the first few minutes to be one of those stereotypical indie art-house movies where "nothing ever happens." The non-professional actors guarantee a lack of showy, theatrical performances. The setting is as oppressively mundane as one can imagine. Much of the film is taken up by (weirdly hypnotic, but if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller it may seem otherwise)footage of plastic dolls being made in a factory. But, just as we think we know what we're getting, one of the main characters is strangled to death! Suddenly, Bubble has what might be called a "thriller-skeleton," without any artificial suspense - we see a ho-hum, realistic police investigation, and that's it. I can't help but think that Soderbergh is messing with us a little here - this movie has the plot of a thriller, but that last thing it wants to do is "thrill."

On the movie more generally - Soderbergh gets fantastic, naturalistic performances from the actors that I don't think he could get with professionals. Great movie - tough to watch but I was riveted. 10/10.
