Any Messages from people that live in the area it took place?

I was just wondering if there was any one that is posting messages that are from the area where the movie took place?? If so what do you think about the movie??

I live here and I'm dating "Kyle". I thought the movie was better than I thought it was going to turn out. I got to watch the making of it, so I know all the behind the scene stuff and it just makes it better that way. I know all the actors personally and I thought they were all great. I couldn't picture anyone else doing what they did in the film. They just worked so well together. The locations they used were great. It shows our town, but it looks just like any other town. It shows the rich parts, the poor parts, and everthing inbetween. I think they did a very nice job creating this film, and I'm especially proud of the actors who did a wonderful job just 'going with the flow'. I give it a big thumbs up!

If you don't mind me asking did they get paid for doing the film or was it just an experience. If you know what I mean? My parents was extra's in walker texas ranger and they got paid a small fee but since "Kyle" was one of main character's in the movie I was just wondering. Does he want to do any more acting? Sorry If I am asking so many questions. I am a mother of two and I am a stay at home mom that homeschools the kids. I have panic attacks and don't go any where so I totally understand about panic attacks. My wonderful husband is so understanding. But my son who is 14 is very interested in making movies. I figure it was very interesting to watch it going on. I couldn't really understand why it was rated R I didn't really see anything that bad and there wasn't that many cuss words in it. I think" Kyle "did a really good job. I am more in to really scary movies so when I heard that was coming out I thought it would be a scary movie. I did purchase the movie and I Have not seen the alternate ending yet I am going to watch that tomorrow I watched all the interviews but missed the alternate ending.

badgerchic, did you have a chance to be in the movie?? I called the number to try to get my dad as an extra and they said they was all filled. I was just wondering if you had a chance to be in it? Was Belpre's Mayor not in it? I thought I read somewhere or heard that he was going to be in it but that might of been the detective was he from Belpre or Parkersburg?Sorry for all the questions again it is just so interesing to know someone that knows all about the movie and has her boyfriend in it.

reply

No, I didn't get a chance to be in the movie, just my car and boyfriend. I was there a lot though. I really didn't even know about the movie until he came home and said he went for a movie audition, which I was very surprised of b/c of his social anxiety. I was very proud after finding out he got the lead and since he drove my car there they asked if they could use it. The mayor wasn't in the movie and I don't believe there was plans to put him in it. Detective Moody was in it. It was an awesome experience and I wish everyone could understand how down-to-earth everyone was. You would expect people from Hollywood and New York to be pushy or something, but they were far from it. I wish I could've been an extra or something, but I was just happy to be a part of it in any way.

While he wasn't in the film, the Mayor of Belpre did play a part. He announced at a luncheon that the movie was being made so it was announced in the newspaper-- much to the annoyance of the producers who wanted to keep a low profile so hoards of rubber neckers didn't stand around getting in the way. He also didn't seem to appreciate the attention the city will get from the movie and instead lamented the fact that no major actors came to town. I guess he is among those that just didn't understand how great an opportunity it was for everyone involved since he didn't like the film and didn't get to meet George Clooney, etc.

I don't live in Belpre, but I do currently live in Athens, OH, which is about a half hour away. I grew up in Zanesville, which isn't much further either, and the characters in this movie could have well been exact replicas of people I grew up with: co-workers, neighbors, friends, etc. Hollywood has gotten a bad rap this past year for being out of touch with Middle America, but as a person from the area I feel like Soderbergh really nailed this one. I've seen only a handful of movies in which I connected with the characters in such an honest way. But then again, this really isn't a Hollywood film.

By the way, "Kyle" did an excellent job. That was the personality Heath Ledger wishes he could've portrayed... minus the whole gay thing.

i grew up in Parkersburg and thought the movie was interesting....it was cool for me to try to indentify some of the locations shown the the movie. I dont totally agree that the characters in the movie honestly dipict the people of P-Burg or Belpre. You could find these type of people in just about any small town in middle america. I will say this, as a native I was not pleased with Misty's comments in the interview portion of the DVD...I have found people of Parkersburg and WV in general to be some of the most friendly that I have come across in my extensive travels. In addition i have never seen anyone not wearing shoes in the stores around Parkersburg...not sure where she is shopping.

I grew up in Parkersburg too...I was mortified when I saw the characters and how they were ABSOLUTELY without a doubt exploited...Misty really sounds like she needs to go back to Texas with her 4 kids and her career in hair dressing...funny, she looks like the type that would walk barefoot in the stores with her kids...I've NEVER seen that...EVER...who does she think she is? Did she think that people wouldn't see her commentary? Honey if they didn't like you then, I doubt you have a chance of making firends there now. They came in and found the "types" that would make good characters, and chose areas for the film that would perpetuate the stereotype they were looking for. They showed trailer parks as if that is all we have! And not to mention only casting people who would live in them...I hope that most in Parkersburg choose not to watch the film...however, if they do, I hope that they get over the whole "hollywood" thing and realize that they were duped and should have refused to allow this movie to be made there.

i can totally see how natives would be offended. the movie had a rather elitist feel to it. in a way i saw it as a warning against uneducated people who have very little understanding of their own motivations. it's focus was on the underclass. people who have neither the intelligence or the means to examine their own lives. used for low skill labor. expected to work, eat, and die like so much cattle.

i'm sorry you were offended. i certainly don't feel like this is representative of your home. i saw it as a movie that focused on the underclass of that region.

reply

I appreciate that...I just wish that it was the writer and diector coming out with the apologies...I received one response back from someone who proclaimed it a "masterpiece" and as "true as it gets"...THAT is EXACTLY what I was afraid of...I am a professional and live and work in a bordering state where my fellow co-workers like to joke about the fact that I am from West Virginia...not to mention a professional woman from West Virgina...I am asked on a weekly basis to play that up with some of our southern clients and it really offends me...when everyone heard about the film, they rented it and then I fielded ignorant questions for about an hour in regards to the actors and the area...and if it wasn't bad enough, this movie is now representative to them of the place where I grew up and where my family still resides...I don't mean to offend the actors or anyone else who have formed opionions of this movie, but I can't believe that it is socially acceptable to exploit the unfortunate and turn around and have dinner with Brad Pitt, meanwhile holding this movie in high regards for it's "truth" in cinema...sorry for the rant...but, thank you for the sentiments...thank you for all the natives who are left restless...;0)
