Well.

The acting was actually quite good. It was the plot that drug it down. And Netflix's summary was way off - no one tries to solve the crime except the police. Nothing happened the entire movie. It was a really good analysis of small-town factory workers (I grew up in a small town and almost everyone I know ended up in a factory) but it could have played off the drama MUCH more, as factories are hotbeds for that kind of activity.

Like I said, it wasn't the actors' faults, the script was boring and the dialogue was unrealistic. Dustin was by far my favorite, and he's also extremely handsome (hehe).

What was even the point of this film?

from sampling the dvd's directory commentary track, shoot, seems like the alleged plot just followed the most recent improvisation trends.

not my cuppa tea, in spite of ebert's rave review.

It would appear that the Netflix summary was way off, even the descriptions I read were off. It's a character study of desperate impoverished people in small town America.
There's Martha who's either in love with the main protagonist or is at lest very possessive. The one shred of happiness in her life is to her mind being taken away by a woman who she knows is ultimately a bad person.
There's Rose who uses people, steals, and manipulates. Her treatment of other people become her ultimate undoing.
Finally there's Kyle who's used to a life of misery. When his best friend murders the girl he has a crush on (knowing that she stole from him at this point) he can barely react. Even talking to Martha at the jail knowing she would spend the rest of her life in jail for the murder he can't bring himself to be angry or sad.
I really don't find any problems with the script at all to be honest.

I mean, I get that - the character study part wasn't heavily veiled or anything. But character depth is only ONE part of a film, you can't just neglect every other aspect including plot, dialogue, and so on. The way the characters acted toward each other was so dry and they mostly spent the whole movie eating Wendy's and nobody cares, when suddenly Rose is dead and nobody cares, then the killer is caught and nobody cares. I know factory drama and this was not it. It left me with no emotion or anything at all.

Absolutely agree with you on the Netflix summary way off not even close... I found the movie fascinating but I can't even tell you why. It just felt real and real fascinates me
