Wonderful film - better than 'Lincoln'
I watched "Amazing Grace" for the first time on television last night and thought the story was beautifully told and supremely well acted.
Back in January I saw "Lincoln" and thought it was rather a dull and plodding affair, though of course DDL was as good as I've come to expect from him. But I found the film itself quite boring until about the last half-hour. With "Amazing Grace", I was totally engaged from the start. All the characters were brought to life for me by the talented British cast and it was a film full of humour and humanity. In a way, the two films are both political procedurals, but "Amazing Grace" managed tell its story with wit and a lightness of touch that made "Lincoln" seem overly respectful. Ioan Gruffudd's William Wilberforce and everyone else in the film created fully-rounded flesh-and-blood characters that I could identify with. Even the pro-slavery faction was wonderfully represented by the fabulous Toby Jones and Ciaran Hinds.
