I believe the show was prematurely cancelled, once the network realised the show was actually pretty good and won a few awards they backtracked and said it was a mini series "one Off', when it was supposed to be a regular TV series.

American TV executives are stupid basically, they are too quick to cancel shows and green light crap.

I bet the guy who ended Deadwood is still employed somewhere making good money, in reality he should be mopping floors at Crispy creme, because thats a job he might be able to do.
