A copy of 30 days of night

Anyone thinks this it´s too similar?

reply

Yes the similarities are very apparent...but i don't think there was any intention to be a copy or anything.

reply

I think the writer got his inspiration from the comic.

reply

Frostbiten came first so it's not copying 30 Days of Night. 30 Days of Night is total garbage loaded with shakycam and Frostbiten is a real film so there's no comparison anyway.

reply

Well not really... It was published by IDW in 2002 or something I think.
Also it should be almost impossible to miss if you have the slightest interest in vampires and/or comicbooks.

However I for one dont think that it is a copy, well the basic concept and it appearing on the same latitudes of Canada.
And it is hard to think that would impose on copyrights enough to qualify as a technically copied script, especially as frostbiten puts no particular weight on this angle.
Besides theres a Swedish vampire shortmovie from, hmm 1998 with this basic concept also. (In the long periods of darkness the vampires found time to search genetics/blood that will allow them to eventually endure sunlight and eat the world population.)

Also if you read books like Dean Ray Koontz "Phantoms" 1983 (who has'nt that calls himself a horror fan?) it was kinda obvious to make connections that the unknown threat would be something vampire-like. Altough it is a "blob-alike" that aint to picky and consumes more than just the blood of it's victims.

About the compared films in Question,
I think both movies has some appealing moments, and some less interesting moments to put it a nice way.
CGI is a bad thing, unfinished scripts are worse.
(You know, I wanna know what happened in the abrupt parallell story with Jakob? 'N stuff like that.)
But they lean on different angles, 30 days is serious, Frostbiten is a comedy?
My favorite moment is actually in frostbiten, these guys really caught a hilarous moment when the arch-vampire/old geezer is hit by the ambulance and were served a close-up of old flubby buzzard/geezer crack at the peak in the movies most serious moment. Nice with some distance guys with humour in this day and age.

Finally, about one movie being total garbage as opposed to the lesser rated opponent. There is definitely a garbage factor in both films, but I'll let IMDB crown the winner if it is necessary to explore the downsides.
How do you compare two movies with different approaches as survival vs. humour anyway?

I just try to look at them with contempt that at least somebody is making vampire flicks.
Instead enjoy the positive, Swedes making something other than Bergman wannabee anxiety b/w sheit, and something that has some cozy "The Thing" factor and Raimi's name in the creds. =)

Personally I host a deeply rooted love for the bloodsucker genré. I suppose I'm about one of very few lunatics that actually tried to track down and view every single vampire flick with Christopher Lee. =)
I am very fond of Hammer Studio's work.
I like the first installment of Blade, though the sequels, in particular the last that starred that embarrasing team that help him out sucked more than anything previous of bad ideas.

But I think theres a lot of neat vampire stuff out there.
Fright Night holds a particular warm place in my beating heart as that girls smile was the mightiest i've ever seen.
THE classic is Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers, and yeas I've seen both versions of Nosferatu, Dracula 1931 and I took a nose dive in exploitation (Blacula and so forth) but no doubt, "Fearless" dominates.
As you given so very few vampire flicks a good rating, here are some stuff you might enjoy in case you have not seen them:

(Oh yeah, in no particular order I'm just grabbing out in my senile mind, I'll probably miss a lot of really "must" titles.)

Lifeforce
Vampires (Carpenter's)
From Dusk To Dawn
Interview with a Vampire
Innocent Blood
Black Sabbath (three stories, one with vampires)
Black Sunday
Vampires (Jose Larraz from... like early 70:ies)
Blood - The Last Vampire (Anime)
Near Dark
Twins Effect
Vampire in Brooklyn
Van Helsing (The one with Wolverine guy, my brain dont connect right now)
The Satanic Rites Of Dracula
Underworld
The Vampire Lovers (Ingrid Pitt from Where Eagles Dare)
Countess Dracula (While were still on the sexiest babe in our known universe, well maybe would finish the race parallell with Salma Hayek and Barbara Bouchet)
Vampires Kiss with Nicolas Cage (Not for everyone, very strange but hilarious)
While not for everyone I have to list Romeros "Martin" and the Video Invest classic "Blood For Dracula" I also beleive it's known as Andy Warhols dracula?
Rabid (This is so frikkin good, it is a vampire theme aint it?)
The last man on earth (With Price, suppose this is kinda hot again with I Am Legend playin at the theaters)
I have a lot of flicks I cant remember the titles of straight up, there was this show on telly with mobsters and vampires, maybe you know wich one I mean?
Anyhows there a lot of worthwile vampire stuff out there my friend...

And finally, my personal favorite all things put aside is Giorgio Ferroni's "Night of the Devils" .72 (And NOT Ellorietas from -71). Please notice you need the UNCUT edition, it is extremely bloody and psychotic if you find the full version. (Actually based on Tolstoy's the vurdalak just like Mario Bavas flick "Black Sabbath" whom the music group stole their name from.)

Hope these tips gives you some fun mate,

Find that hard to belive since "Frostbiten" came first...

reply

Idiot that I am I actually thought they were the same film for a while.
See, I read about Frostbite (that's the title it went under here) in one movie magazine or another when it came out, thought it sounded like an interesting concept but never saw it (I live in the middle of nowhere and a lot of films pass us by). Then I went to University, stopped getting any magazines or going to the cinema much (couldn't afford it anymore), and sort of lost track of things. Therefore, when I heard all this stuff about "30 Days of Night" being released on DVD and heard the basic premise, I assumed that it had just had its name changed for marketing purposes or something. *facepalm*

Vinegarfly - youre missing the point, and also youre not reading the nfo in the thread carefully =)
"30 days" is a comic from 2002 - so your implying it could not be because it came out first would therefore only be proof of the opposite of what youre stating ;)

Nah seriously, there are, like i pointed out similarities and differences.
But I doubt anyone could deny the obvious influences of the theme, or?

I know this is quite late to post this but in the FAQ it says that the first draft was already written in 1999.

BTW är du svensk?

reply

Both of them remind me of a short story I read back in the mid 90's, the name of the story and the writer elude me, but it was in a collection called "Under The Fang". It is entirely possible that both of them were inspired from that source.

reply

Why do people keep saying the same irrelevant things on this thread? Regardless of the source of inspiration, the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT comic was obviously produced BEFORE the movie FROSTBITEN.

Ooo, baby, your domestic gross is SO BIG. That's how I know how GOOD you are!

reply

Hey, did you check out the 2nd point in my post? I read material 10 years before either one was produced using the same gimmick!

Having said that...I liked them all, although I still feel the art in the comic was weak, acceptable, but weak.

reply

I did see that, but you still made a point of stating that 30 Days was probably inspired by Frostbiten, which is demonstrably untrue.

Valid point. Appropriate changes have been made to my post. Thank you.
