Odd casting for parents

I picked this up at the video store, mainly on the strength of Chris Pine's other work - I had no expectations on it, but was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Certainly had its flaws of flat characters, improbably leaps, and a little too much schmaltz, but a good script and very well paced, and Chris Pine did a great job, One of my biggest complaints is the casting of his parents, and in general putting Chris Pine in as a Italian-American. Hard to believe him as part of that family, he didn't fit the physical look... just a minor complaint...

just saw it and totally agree. i felt like he was an adopted member of that family just on looks and then Eddie Kay Thomas' randomly over the top "italian" accent, and i couldn't fathom how they could be related to eachother. That being said, i enjoyed pine in this. obvs. not the greatest script, but Pine is really talented and natural, he just sorta makes it work.

Yep agree with both it is a very odd casting choice but i think when you look at the mother she is not exactly Italian either so i think they cast her in so chris could more fit in in away. but yeah a famliy that looked like they could be his famliy would of been a better fit but i geuss they liked a Italian type of famliy feel Italians are very big on family. and esp mothers with there sons they are very protective and if their child has a disablity then they are very very protective which shows in the film.

but apart from that it is a very good film i loved it and have watched it several times.
