I agree with you. I saw last night on cable and I thought it was really good.

Most people seem to mention the dialogue, somewhat convoluted plot, an excessive focus on Raph, or even the overall feel of it. I fall somewhere in the middle.

I loved the look of the movie, basic plot too. The plot was epic and even though it could probably never have the emotional weight of facing off against Shredder I thought it was solid; you can't have Shredder in every TMNT movie. Action was awesome when it happened an some of the story (particularly Leo and Raph's journeys) I'd say had real weight behind it. I also really liked the revelation about Winters' character. Even though his character revelation came as more of a shock, especially with such little time spent on it, it was cool to see something that's unexpected but still fits. Plus, Raph's vigilante crusade could have made for excellent talking points, like about how that was different from what the turtles did before.

I def had some problems with it though. The pacing was pretty weak. I have no problems with movies that take their time in development (Once Upon a Time in the West is one of my favorite movies), but TMNT threw a whole lot of plot at the viewer and only had 87 min to wrap it up. I would have wanted about 2 hours, especially with the way the beginning took its time. In going with that, the action the movie did have was fantastic but every sequence felt rushed.

Leo and Raph were exciting in this one (though I wanted a little more done with Leo; I agreed with Raph that he could be smug) but almost every other character was neglected. Donny had nothing to do, Splinter had little personality imo, Casey was boring (as mentioned by someone else on the board), April had absolutely NO personality and is suddenly a ninja too (who if I saw correctly held her own against Karai for a brief time, which would not be cool at all; Karai should require a bare minimum of one turtle to be intimidating), and not enough time was spent on the villains to make them feel emotionally weighty. The dialogue didn't help at all; was overly childish in ways the first movie never was and was pretty painful at times. Plus the monsters' designs weren't that interesting.

All in all I enjoy the movie in its own right though I wish it got some things right. Heck, if it just ran for 15 more min and had someone rewrite the dialogue I'd have loved it.

I don't know about you guys, but I just rewatched all 4 TMNT movies in a row over the course of 2-3 weeks (with my kids this time) and out of the 4, dare I say it, this is arguably the BEST one! I think it lost a few points with the throw in of the ancient stone guys...seemed like an after thought and the movie could've worked WITHOUT it, but it was still a blast and the dialogue/voice acting was outstanding! Besides some of the Mikey lines, most of it felt "real", especially the Leo/Raph exchange before the fight!

Casey was boring (as mentioned by someone else on the board)

What the f--

Casey was basically on par here with the live action version, mostly there to be a badass and to provide comic relief. His banter with Raphael here is some of the best in the movie series. Hell, this movie got his relationship with Raph better than the original movies did, which other than the time they met, Casey tended to hang around Donatello or Splinter (and a bunch of Japanese dudes...).

I know this is an older post, but I agree. I just don't get it. What didn't people like? I watched the TMNT cartoon growing up (was born in '80), played the video games, watched the live action movies, had toys GALORE, and I absolutely loved this TMNT. It was fun and enjoyable. Sure, there were some things that they could have done better (I'd have loved more Don and Mike), but I've watched it probably 5 - 10 times and just enjoy it every time. It's great.

I think the backlash is because fans had been wanting (and expecting) a live movie, which was in the works for years (reported to be directed by John Woo). After years of anticipation, it seems anything short of an epic live movie not going to be well received.

1. It's boring
2. It's too tame and it holds back too much. There is nothing substantial here as far as TMNT movies go.
3. The plot is confusing, and ultimately not that interesting when you finally figure it out.
4. The villains are lame
5. Too much time is dedicated to the opening of the film in Central America instead of dedicating more time to the scenes of the turtles getting back together.
6. The scene where Leo is stalking the Nightwatcher and telling him to stop fighting crime is nonsensical. It is not like a superhero to tell another superhero to stop being a goodguy...for no reason.
7. The fight scenes are so quick and blurry that you can hardly see what's going on during the action.
8. Mikey and Don's weapons are criminally underused and barely visible here.
9. The dialogue is cheesy in parts, especially the scene in which Casey is talking to Raph on the roof top.
10. Don and Mikey are practically non-existent and superfluous to the movie.

My main issue with the movie is that it felt like a pilot to a TV series rather then a self contained full fledged movie. There is too many plot threads in the movie that aren't really paid off in the short run time.

Had there been a 2nd movie or a weekly series that built on the movie I don't think it would be judged as harshly.

the main plot was relatively weak but other than that i loved it. right up there with the 1990 film in my books.

i just love movies.

I like it. The plot bothers me, I really wish they didn't do what they did with TMNT 3 an add new villians. Not saying Shredder. But comics, cartoons, etc...Choose a known villian.

Outside of that I didn't really have an issue with it.

The plot was boring, Leonardo was unlikable in this, Donnie and Mikey aren't given much to do, and Splinter's voice sounded off.

The start with the guy who opens a portal, gets him eternal live, renders his generals into stone and emerges 13 monsters was already so lame. Beyond words.
Kind of a cliched 1980 black/white children story.
Cant bring such a lame story these days. Although the movie is from 2007 and I watched it just now, I dont think it would have entertained me better 7 years ago.

The entire Leonardo-jungle part was a waste of screentime too. Unnecessary.

The climax was disapointing, quickly done with little fuss. The immortal stone generals (all lame stereotypes - the usual I want to rule/destroy the world) turned out to be no worthy opponents at all. Easily kicked into the vortex. The last monster slipped into the vortex by itself pushing the generals back into it again too on its way.

The only interessting part was the nightwatcher.

There are a few key missed opportunities... Mostly the focusing too much on the alien/immortality subplot and not giving enough time to all the Turtles; and even in that respect it focused more on Leonardo & Raphael, not giving the (in my opinion) more nuanced characters of Donatello and Michelangelo their dues (and, at worst, turned them into caricatures of themselves - moreso Mikey).

But, you're right - I thought it was very enjoyable. The visuals were especially good; I loved the shadowing, coloring and movement of the animation!
