Gay love story subtext?

Look, I'm not out to get flamed, but... I watched the movie and just felt something weird about it. After the third time, it hit me, the two boy characters were a couple. Here is what made me draw my conclusions:
First, why was Logan Lerman's character so obsessed with the bare foot blond kid? He watched him so intensely, it was obvious he was attracted to him. All of the things he did for cody's character, why else would he do that for a guy he just met? The logical heterosexual thing to happen, would be that logan would tell mullet finger's sister that he liked her, but he didn't, they remained just friends. Who ended up going off together at the end of the film, the two boys. I'm not saying that the movie is a big homofest, but I think that it could be a really good film for young gay guys to watch if this is pointed out. I would have loved a film like this when I was growing up gay. Would really like to see if I'm the only one who got this out of the movie.

Come on, young boys, the other one a metrosexual tree hugger hippy type.....only hollywierd would make this stuff up like this!

Look, I;m not saying that the movie was about two teen gay boys after each other. I'm just saying that a subtext can be sensed there. If you don't see it, or it offends you in some way, don'y think about it. Enjoy the movie the way you think. However, some other people, like young gay teen boys can look at this as a movie that they can relate to. They can look at it as the two boys were falling for each other. What's the problem with that?

I think ignorant and intolerant jerks like yourself could keep their unwanted opinions to themselves. Go comment on something that you agree with. I'm sure that are plenty of gay hating commenters around that you can "me too" with. Glad to know that a person like you who is not wrong exists on here, now I can help my friends who are lost in the world and looking for God. Nice to know that anyone thats sees things different from you are just wrong. Grow up or shut up.

There you go, I talk about a nice story about two young people falling in love, and you bring sex into it. I never said that I pictured them boinking each other. I just said that it seemed they were falling for each other. Get your mind out of the gutter. You sick perv. How you could take innocent remarks such as mine, and make it seem that I was talking about some xrated sexual perv stuff? You really need to get you head examined. You sicko.

I am a 14 year old straight girl. and i think that if a 14 year old guy is wearing western themed pajamas and lets his mom tuck him in, then somethings definetly wrong. I think another thing is that people automatically think that a guy is gay if you see him hugging another guy whereas if you see a girl hugging a girl then your like whatever. i know thats like totally off topic but the point im trying to get at is that guys are more easily accused of being gay that girls being lesbian. so maybe he is gay, but maybe people are just too easily jumping to conclusions.

Did anyone notice that Logan appeared to have an erection in the scene about the bulldozer seat? Just curious!

I'd have to agree with the original poster. Saw this movie for the first time and, although I don't obviously think it was completely intended, the obsession with him was awkward. I thought about it too and came here to see if anyone else noticed, and low and behold.

Nothing wrong with a different interpretation of the movie. Hell, people feel that The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin had homosexual suggestions in it between Jim and Huck.

Really what would be the difference if he confessed an attraction to the girl? Boy or girl, there would be a sexual suggestion if he admitted a crush on one of them, and people would still have a problem.

"People have the right to look at a film anyway they want. But anyone who would look at this children's film and think Roy and Mullett are "falling for each other" would have to be an idiot. "

I guess im an idiot. well...i know they didnt mean it like that though. like, they werent supossed to be gay thats not what it was meant for at all. but they did SEEM kinda...you know.

reply

is homosexuality wrong for children to learn about?

reply

You're not the only one who thought this. I didn't see it at first either but after coming on this board I figured it out. My thoughts on this is just Hoolywood. They tend to put the biggest things up for debate in movies in order to bring in money. If you look at the movie Superman Returns they changed his character to match the people of today. I did read the book Hoot and I think it explained the whole thing.

reply

i was having the same feeling. So he sees some barefoot blond kid running and he can't take his eyes off him and then he feels like following him. um, WTF. it seems a little aukward.

As I said before Hoollywood does this with every current thing that people get upset about. Many shows like the Simpsons, Family guy , and American dad insultthe most recent issues but Hoollywood is the worst.

When they are in the headlines Hollywood use that as a way to make money and shows that poke fun at everything else also do the same. On the show the Simpsons they portray gay people as feminests and having a wiered style.

reply

Why can't you spell 'Hollywood' correctly? You misspelled it twice in two different posts.

I just watched the movie & felt the Roy character had a gay interest in Cody's character too. Obsessed with the barefoot gorgeous blonde boy and then when they meet I think the feeling is returned.
Also Roy never objects to everyone calling him 'cowgirl' Com'on give me a break. But the pajamas & his mother's way of tucking him in without any protest (a what- 14 year old boy is gonna take that from his mother? I don't think so!)really put the gay theme over the top.
I felt bad that it ended with Mullet Fingers still out on his own. Why couldn't Roy's parents give him a foster home? Then the mother could tuck them both in!!

reply

idk well i thought the same thing.. when i watched it for the first time i was thinking to myself hum a gay PG love story (i was surprised cuz almost every movie that protrays gay charcters is rated R) and i was happy .. and still think that it has a gay subtext.. and me being Bi and only 14 am very happy about that.. and im gald im not the only one who noticed this!

P.S. i'd go out w/ cody!

What in the hell is wrong with you people. GAY LOVE SUBTEXT?! How in the freakin' hell would you get gay love subtext out of this movie. I am a 17 year old boy that is strait as an arrow and if there was a boy running down the street at breakneck speed with no shoes on I think I would be just a tiny bit curious. And like one of the other posters said if there were an infection growing inside one of my friends, I would not even hesitate taking them to a hospital. And another thing so what if they were hanging out at the end. I have a friend that is a boy and we hang out a lot. Holy Moly you people need a CT Scan and an MRI.

I must admit, when I first saw that scene, the word gay did pop to mind. Then came the scene where Roy sits next to Beatrice, and I was all 'ooh'. Funny how half the people think he should be with mullet fingers and half think he should be with beatrice. kinda like harry potter, but with harry/hermione/ron.
Anyway, by the end I was upset that Roy didn't end up with Beatrice.
The whole 'Gay' steryotype is all wrong. His pajamas are short. So what? Remember in Harry Potter when Ron's pajamas were too short? And we all know he's gonna end up with Hermione, right? Plus, he goes to middle school. He's still a kid and his parents obviously baby him. It is such a surprise? And perhaps he's been babied his whole life. Maybe he's never really felt too much pain except for that of moving so often. I mean, if moving one more time upsets him, he's probably pretty weak. He also appears to be quite a momma's boy, which explains a lot too. And sure, they call him cowgirl, but would you object if you were slightly intimidated by the person who gives you such a nickname? My Chem Honors teacher pronounces my name wrong and I admit, I'm too intimidated to correct him.
As for the whole Mullet thing? he isn't looking dreamily, he's focused. He's interested, and not romantically. I mean, this kid can outrun the bus. I wouldn't say I'd jump off the bus and chase the kid down, but I wouldn't let it pass. And what, do you not smile at your friends? Geez...

Oh, and I doubt this movie was meant for kids as young as 5. The constant bullying , running from the police, legal issues, and everything used was probably directed to kids around 10 or so. I mean, most kids younger than that would think 'oh. this kid meets a kid who lives by himself and together, they save the cute little owls from the evil pancakes'. I mean, wtf?? They wouldn't understand stuff such as the paper about the owls on the site or the thing that freezes the owls.

I totally agree with you!!!. This movie is rated PG. So that means kids as young as 5 or all kids near a guidance with them to see it.

They just use attractive actors in movies, would people be talking this way if it was an unattractive guy with shoes? . Give me a break.

dude thats really rude

This movie has no gay subtext. Wouldn't you be a little curious if you saw some kid running as fast a bus with no shoes? And OK, I would just let my friend let an infection grow instead of taking him to a hospital. Geez, you people can see an act of friendiness and call it gay subtext...give me a break.

reply

Do you have any gay friends? Do you know anyone gay?

reply

I acually would. If I saw somebody running around without any shose I would think somethings up. If a kid I just met had been hurt I would help him because in my own way I'm a good person. I'm sure the media will bring this up sooner or later just like they always do.

For god's sake, this is *beep* ridiculous. It's a PG rated movie, there isn't going to be gay subtexts in it what the hell is wrong with you people? I've got nothing against gay people, but I think it's stupid for someone to pull things like that from a movie like this. I mean come on. If you've read the book, you'll know that the directors and producers were just trying to make it similar to what Carl Hiaasen wrote; Roy was really curious about why this kid was running in barefeet and if he needed help. Roy is a caring person and that's what caring people do. My advice to you people who think this movie has gay subtexts: read the book, you'll understand better.

"You gotta start thinking like an outlaw."

Yes. the palm action. you can hit people more power with your palm because it hurts less than using your knuckles. haven't you seen all hose kung fu movies?

I get the feeling that they're gay too. Not just when watching the movie, before I even read the book (I read the book before seeing the movie). My sister told me a little bit about it. She said this boy sees a kid running while he's on the bus and then follows him. I always thought that was kind of weird. If I was in his place, yes- like a few of you said- I would be interested in a really fast kid with bare feet. But I don't think I would chase him lke Roy does. That's a little... much.

But anyway, I've always had that feeling too. I don't know if the author had that in mind a first, but it seems a lot of people feel that way. The main idea is the owls, but there can always be other plots in a story.

reply

I can't believe this? you people are seriously THAT stupid to even think something like that? let me answer your questions to prove he's NOT gay
1.) Why was he obsessed with Mullet fingers? Because a kid running barefoot caught his eye, he wanted to get to know him more. Please even i'm known to do that. Does that make me Gay too?
2.)what he did do that for Mullet fingers? because he was his friend he was shown something that really caught his attention (the owls) and over time he made a friend out of beatrice and Mullet fingers. But i guess he couldn't be Mullets friend cause that would make him gay. I guess that makes you gay if you have same sex friends.
3.) He didn't like either of them in a sexual way, he was their friends your logic is OBSERD to say the least.
4.) Roy and Mullet stayed friends, do you not hanging out with just your same sex friends? or are you too scared they might hit on you?

Your last statement shows how obserd you are just because your gay doesn't mean that every single guy who has guy friends and hangs out with other guys is gay. I think you saw this in a one track manor and didn't see the truth. The point of Hoot isn't to promote homosexuality, The point of the book and of t he movie to show kids that big name companies are out there tearing up animals homes, i live in a neighborhood where theres nothing but constant construstion building going up left and right, we have buildings be built left empty because we have everything you could possibly DREAM of over here, after seeing it, it opened my eyes to what those big name companies are doing. Not because two boys hang out together and help save the owls are friggin "homosexuals". You want a movie about Gay's and homosexuality go watch brokeback mountian. But don't think that i am against you or anyone being gay, i am just saying to you that you're way of over analyzing this movie to make the guys seem "Gay" is totally and outrageously obserd.

reply

HERE HERE! That's the most sensible thing I've read on this entire topic.

"You gotta start thinking like an outlaw."

reply

I totally agree! If you get 2 friends being gay out of this movie, I'd hate to see some of y'all's comments for other movies. I mean seriously! Just because you're gay, doesn't mean everyone else is. I'm not dissing anyone, but come on. Grow up just a little bit and you'll see that!

reply

ok now i am gay.. yea i know.. haha right?.. yea well MF and Roy act the same way (give or take a few actions) i do with my boyfriend.. IM NOT SAYING the point ot subplot of this movie book, is supposed to be gay.. but they act it.. even if they arent really gay
