Didn't Denzel die in the end?

But we see him walking upto Paula Patton.

The one who walks up to Paula Patton was the Denzel from that time.
Yeah except then, when a few days go by, he will be dead (from 'that time',) except he wouldn't be because he won't have to go back in time to save her and the ship's passengers. But why is he alive if he had gone back to save her? He would be dead, if she is alive, because he died saving her. Or...she wouldn't be alive if he is alive, and hadn't saved her and died.

And is his body not found in the vehicle later when it is pulled up?

Too bad Denzel can jump into the water and live, but Tony Scott couldn't.

Shouldn't laugh - but I did.... 😀

No... his body was blown into smithereens and eaten by fish.

I'm guessing there could be a sequel to try to understand the other Denzel.
Same fingerprints and other characteristics of the other.
Because his body had to be recovered.

Interesting that she had all the letters to spell:
YOU CAN SAVE HER.
Good work Denzel.
Without that hint - does he go back ?

I enjoyed the movie and watch it from time-to-time.
I Love the TIME TRAVEL concept in movies.
But when Hot Tub Time Machine was a good movie
the sequel I saw last night 2/18/2015 basically sucked.

there really wasn't any need for him to spell that on her fridge since his past self didnt' have to go back in time anymore later.
which also begs the question of if he also did all of that in the previous loop how come things didn't change then

Well, there's a significant inconsistency, here.

He wants to give information but he wants to be somewhat "cryptic." I've suggested in other threads: If Carlin was so quick to say "send a warning note... send it to ourselves, send it to me..." why wouldn't he just call himself the morning of Fat Tuesday? It was only four days ago. He has to know where he was and what he was doing that morning. And since he couldn't take anything back with him, all he would need to "steal" would have been a cell phone. He has to know (and be able to recall) his own cell number if he can't recall any other numbers.

It seems that he went back in time without a plan. Dr. Denny reminded him of the time that the ferry explodes, That's it? I know the clock was literally running but if Dr. Denny was expecting his call AND Carlin had given it enough consideration, why wasn't there a better plan? Take several trusted cell phone contacts (which you may not be able to remember) and write them on your arms, legs or feet... If you call these folks at 8:30 AM, Tuesday, they won't know the difference from Doug 1.0 (from the original past) and Doug 2.0 (who went back in time).

With three hours before the explosion (two hours after he saves Claire), Carlin has to be able to mobilize a group through all of his local law enforcement contacts throughout his career. There has to be a favor owed here or there, where someone would just do something without asking any questions because they trust Carlin and his judgment.

Four people from ANY office would have been more than enough! He decided to move forward with just two people (one trained / one not) when he knows his plan and he knows that Oerstadt is willing to kill. He's seen evidence to that effect.

Every time I watch the movie I think the exact same thing. It seems the only reason they have him do that is so that it retroactively makes sense for his future self. But in reality, if he's already going back in time to save her, he would have no reason to write that to a future self because he should assume he's going to save her this time, right?

reply

The better ending would definitely have been him dying in that water, instead of the cliched ending it had.

If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.

One of the time techs said about creating a separate river of time that moves in parallel and that one would die off and the other keep going. When he went back he created such a river and when he died that river stopped. There will now be no reason for him to meet those techs so he just continues on. Simple according to her explanation.

reply

I feel like nobody explicitly explained it.
The version of himself (let's call him V1) that went back in time died, but the version of himself (let's call him V2) in the current timeline remained. So V1 goes into V2's world and dies, leaving only V2 remaining in V2's timeline.
