What happened to the first probe? All I remember is that it just kind of exploded on its decent towards the planet. Did it enter the atmosphere too fast or at the wrong angle? Was it shot down by the eosapiens? Was it just built with some sort of flaw in it?

Sorry this is a bit late, but if you're still interested out there...
The starboard (right-hand) winglet didn't deploy, leaving a gap in that section of the fuselage.
During reentry there was a burn-through, similar to what happened to Space Shuttle Columbia, and the craft broke up as it hit the denser atmosphere.
Don't feel ignorant, I had to run that part back myself the first time I watched it.
