Why name it after a Nazi?

Von Braun was no ordinary German scientist, trying his best to fight the good fight while under the Nazi regime - he was an active participant in it.

He willingly became a member of the Nazi party in 1937; he was an honourary member of the SS; he used concentration camp slave workers at his Mittelwerk rocket production plant where 20k people died.

They should have named the probe Sergei Korolev instead.

well, as a german expat he helped design the craft that took us to our first new world, the moon. he was an active scientist, and had no no nazi love, and did no experiments on camp detainees. get yer facts strait.

How do you know he had no "nazi love"? He clearly had no hate for them, and loved what they did for his career. He was a member of the Nazi Party, and an honourary member of the SS who loved wearing his uniform and saluting Hitler.

And he wasn't just going through the motions of a nazi. He personally elected to use slaves from Buchenwald Concentration camp to build his tunnels at Mittelwerk, and personally oversaw the flogging and torture of prisoners.

Less useful nazis than him were hung at Nuremberg for doing much less.

I have got my facts 'strait'.

Because he was brilliant.
