was john truely regretful? (spoilers)

at the end of the film, do you think john was truely regretful? Did he even have the mental capacity to posess that feeling? When he was telling his girl he would never hurt her, I wonder if he was truely feeling regret for a situation that went horribly out of hand, or if he was so far gone it was basically a broken record in his head.
