It's said 90% junk DNA and 10% pliosaur DNA. So basically a genetically spliced hybrid of multiple species. Both extinct and living.

They're not one specific spices, as they're gen-manipulated, but we can be assured that they're NOT lizards, they're mammals. That being told several times in the show.
