Why were these things so hard to kill?

They had machine guns. It's not like the pterodactyls had shields. I realize that they were terribly rendered CGI creatures that the actors couldn't see but that doesn't mean the characters couldn't. Screw you SyFy or whatever it is you want to be called, for canceling Mystery Science Theater 3000 for this sort of crap.

All they had the small caliber low powered small arms that were designed to barely have enough power to kill humans that the military uses. Nothing that would be effective on creatures that outweighs them by a factor of 2x to 4xs. In addition it's incredibly difficult to hit a moving target especially one that's capable of moving in several different directions at the same time.
