ethan hawke?

I'm not sure if this was asked already but why was ethan hawke uncredited for this film? Thanks

reply

Maybe he feels he didn't play a large enough role.

Director Alex Steyermark was asked about it in the Q&A following both screenings here at the Philadelphia Film Festival as well as in New York at the Tribeca Film Festival. Basically, he said that they are good friends, and at one point Ethan asked him what he was working on. Alex showed him the script. The idea of having Ethan play the father came up and Ethan agreed to do it. It generally falls under the category of "friend doing a cameo," hence why there is no credit.

reply

ooooh. thanks!

Does being uncredited mean less money, no involvement with acting unions (screen actors guild SAG)?

Why exactly would any actor go uncredited, just curious?

reply

I think he still has to get paid scale (SAG minimum).

He did it out of friendship for Alex Steyermark.

As an established artist, he may also realize that had he been credited and therefore, advertised, it may have taken away from the story in the film. There would be too much attention put on the fact that Ethan Hawke had a part in the film and not enough attention on the gut-wrenching, heart-warming aspects of the film.

Shows what you know. It was a great movie about celebrating life, going for what you want, and accepting your mortality.

So, about Ethan Hawke.....can someone please clarify to me...was his father ill? with? and did he commit suicide in the ocean as pictured??

reply

^ No, he didn't commit suicide.

And yes, he was ill; hence, the video tape he made for Dylan before he died.

reply

I believe it's implied in Dylan's mother's conversation with Jason O'Malley that his late father contracted something from prolonged exposure working in the mines in Pennsylvania.
