Horrible accent....

I had NO idea what was going on with her accent and mannerisms until I realised she was trying to pull this faux Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly shtick. In any case the accent and affectations are HORRIBLE.

to me, she was trying to sound like sienna miller in "factory girl".

That just me. It also annoyed the hell out of me!!!

reply

It was supposed to be muddled because she grew up in America.

"I was fabulous and it was a bloody good laugh!"

reply

she was horrible.

reply

I guess it was because her accent is so bad they had to come up with an excuse. And the mannerisms...she just is not Holly Golightly, and it is pathetic to see her posturing.

reply

ugh it was awful half the time she was just speaking without an accent the other half she was doing a strange pilgrim proper immitation. now i see why she doesn't get cast very often

reply

omg haha that is the first thing that went through my mind while watching the first 5 mins of this movie..

The Sienna Miller Factory Girl accent is a North Eastern accent and it was supposed to sound like an offshoot mix of British and American because it's the bastard son of both (sort of an evolution of the people who migrated I suppose). No one talks like that anymore, but if you watch old movies they have it.

And other posters are right, as soon as the film starts it says she talks in a hybrid. Some of her American accent had an inflection I guess one would expect from an Englishwomen living abroad, but if she had moved at the age of 5 she should have lost it as she was too young to retain it. Even actors like Cary Grant couldn't retain their Brit speak and they migrated to America much later in life.

I guess like Madonna, if Madonna's accent was indeed real, she would gain an inflection because being around an English accent all the time people would just naturally pick it up (and then go back to an American accent when they're around other Americans). Blame it on the mind but it is known that people have a tendency to do this.

The idea was that she was supposed to have an AMERICANIZED British accent because of her upbringing in America after the age of 5.

reply

I was so confused and I've only seen the trailer. She had an accent when she was in bed with her ex and then the rest of the trailer it was gone.

reply

As an American, I barely noticed that she had an accent during the movie (with the exception of the opening scene in bed) most of the time she just sounded American to me. The few times that I noticed her accent, I found it less annoying than: her faux Brooklyn accent, Gwenyth Paltrow's faux English accent (and I laughed at the part where "Marvin Bernstein" mentions her being a great British actress), Madonna's faux English accent, 95% of the faux Southern accents on True Blood, Burn Gorman's faux American accent in Penelope (wtf was that? shouting & sounding like you are a stroke victim makes you sound American? really?), Angelina Jolie's English accent, Hugh Laurie's American accent, anything that Eliza Dushku/Jennifer Love Hewitt has ever said in any accent or even her normal speaking voice.

I'm sure it wasn't great, but it didn't make the movie unwatchable for me.

reply

Heh heh. Hugh Laurie's bad American accent is so overdone it makes House unbearable and unwatchable.

reply

They make a joke about it in the movie if you actually pay attention to what you watch.

This is why I love imdb- anything you notice/think/wonder about in a movie will most likely already be posted about here. LOL

The first thing I wondered about this movie was whether she was supposed to have a British accent or not. I didn't believe that they would really let her have that horrible of a British accent, so I decided that it must be an American accent with a hint of British because she's...around Brits, lives there, etc.

I'm a bit annoyed by her awkward Holly Golightly thing. Not really working for me. Maybe if she had practiced it a little more, it would have been better. Idk.

Anyway, imdb is the best.

I agree. I'm kind of amused by the posters who smugly point out that they explained it in the movie, if only us morons would pay attention.

We got it. This movie is not exactly an intellectually challenging film. You didn't pick up on some subtle plot point that the rest of us missed. They mention it several times.

It is still horrible. I'm sitting here watching it now, and it's really really awful. As others have pointed out, it's totally inconsistent. She'll pronounce a word with an American accent in one scene, then pronounce the same word in a cringe-inducing "British" accent in another. She goes through entire scenes without a hint of the accent, and then does other scenes dipping in and out of it. Regardless of the purported reason for this, if it takes the viewer out of the movie because it's so horribly unbelievable, it sucks.

It didn't even occur to me she might be trying to come off like Holly Golightly, but now that you said that, I totally see it. It didn't work. This was one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen in a film.

Sorry for venting. I don't normally post such negative comments. I'm just that irritated right now. That's the last time I give my niece control over the remote.

her ability to convey an Americanized-British no longer mattered to me when she was only wearing undergarments.

Don't worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to end this 17 times.

reply

I think it's the same for a lot of actors who try to pull of English accents. They just try to sound posh or something and it comes out really awful. It's the same thing with Anne Hathaway in Becoming Jane.

reply

I see this problem in several of her movies, not the accent, but her affected acting. It is a problem when you are so aware of the actor trying to act and be a certain something.
And her accent was hard to take. It came and went totally randomly. She was much better just speaking normally.
