so the people he thought could help story couldnt and the people that he found could?

why was the kid looking at the cearel boxes

So when the maintence guy want into the pool and got into the cavern that was where story lived?

The maintenance guy was mislead by the arrogant critic, the only character in the movie that died.

The kid interpreted the mundane (cereal boxes) into prophecy of the universe or something.

Yes, that cavern was where Story lived.
