Really loved this movie.

Came across this at Sydney Film Festival last night at State theatre with a special friend who said it was good :)

Coming to Australia from Hong Kong myself in my late teens with only a younger sister and mother, I could relate to how the little boy felt.

For non-asians, it gives an insight of the bond or relationship between a Chinese mother and her kids as well as the challenges and frustrations of coming to a foreign country with nothing and no social networks.

The mother character was quite interesting. It portrayed the paradox of satisfying her own needs for affection and sexual desire by a man vs the needs of looking after her 2 children. In the end, she did take the easy way out by giving up.

This movie meant a lot to me because apart from my similar childhood (I was luckily not poor compared to guy in movie), I am currently trying to decide whether to find a wife of an Anglo background or one from Mainland China (who has already become a citizen here for a few years). I speak both Mandarin and Cantonese fluently, but I don't really like Chinese music or traditions, and I mainly watch English movies and tv (with the exception of this one and Chinese Martial arts films). But then if I marry someone from an Anglo background, will I get the kids to learn Chinese? I am at the crossroads or sitting on the fence undecided... Those were some of the thoughts I had when the Australian Sailor guy "Uncle Bill" was looking after the kids...

ps I thought Uncle Bill was really a nice guy for putting up with the Mother's cheating and still caring about her as well as having to endure his own "old cow" mother's scorn. As we all know, in-Laws are the worst thing for marriages no matter what culture u r in lol

I think you, like loads of other second generation immigrants, have an identity problem. You feel white inside, but you can't get rid of your 2 dimentional face. How can anyone can't decide who to choose as partner, based on ethnic origins. You are quite "skin deep", so to speak.
