Joan's Performance

Joan won several Best Actress awards for this movie.
What do you think about her performance?

reply

Joan is superb and transformational. It is not an easy character to play and she is definitely a perfect choice for it.

At least the character has more depths and drama than her role as Mrs Yick in Lust, Caution.

This role is a natural fit for Joan Chen and she has done a more than qualified job. But I have to say her performance, as her other performances, is over-acting a bit. Joan Chen is a professional actress and no doubt she act like one. You'll know what I mean when compare her with another great performance from this film given by the amateur Joel Lok.

It was a fine performance. Perfect mix of pure insanity and something extra spicy!

She was mindblowing. Utterly believable. I finally got around to watching this film the other night and I can NOT believe I waited this long to see it. It is probably one of the best Australian films I have seen in a bloody long time. I also enjoyed being taken in another world, that of Chinese immigrant experience in Australia. About time we got to see their stories on the big screen!

don't forget Yuwu Qi's performance. Also incredible.

I finally saw it on DVD today, and I thought this film featured Joan Chen's very best and most challenging role of her career. It has surpassed her other acclaimed performances including "Red Rose, White Rose" and "Saving Face". She's perfectly cast as a singer who is seductive and attractive, yet had a trouble and traumatic early life that caused her to be an "insane" and suicidal mother. It's a star showcase film for her, and she turns in a tri-lingual(Cantonese, Mandarin, and English) performance. The only other actress I can think of that can do a role like is Maggie Cheung, but Joan has more natural sexiness perfectly suitable for the role. Carina Lau might be good too, but she's not fluent in English.
