To conduct this elaborate conspiracy, the Americans need to know that Lena had been Geismar's girlfriend and that she is now Tully's. If they know so much they should be able to catch her and threaten her with prosecution unless she leads them to Emile Brandt. This would be more reliable than assuming Geismar would stumble on the truth for them.

I see where you are coming from, BUT

I thought that she had covered her ass by constantly reporting Emile to be Dead. Seeing this as a dead end, a sort of cat and mouse game was instigated by bringing in Clooney.
