Why did she dump him?

I gathered from the beginning of the movie that she was already greatly longing to leave her small towne life and move on because she felt that she didn't love him anymore.. the accident was just horrible timing. She was already planning to leave him and Wisconsin, but with his accident and all it made her leaving look much worse than she had intended.
