$17,500,000,000.00 BILLION!?

Ok, so I was watching this the other night on Cinemax On Demand.

It cost 250 dollars to subscribe to all three death races, before the last race the announcer said there was a record 70 Million viewers subscribed already.

70,000,000.00

$17,500,000,000.00 dollars revenue?

Do what now?

That seems a lil too much for 3 races, especially with the economy in such a disaster. "Frank" worked 120 hours in two weeks time and only received a $300.00 dollar pay-check.

How could people afford to pay 250.00 dollars for a streamed internet-cast when there only making that much money every two weeks? Plus the power bill, the internet bill, ect.?

I think they made a huge error blurting out their 70 million viewers announcement. Plus, with the way things are today don't you think hackers would find a way around paying 250 dollars to watch a streamed internet-cast without having to pay for it?

Death is expensive.
You better know what youre getting.

don't think too hard on this one.

If you did, you would have read the part about the economy collapsing (this part involved READING at the beginning). That being said, knock a few zeroes off the price tag of this fictional movie.

Torrent a live event? AFAIK, that is impossible.

Not sure where the 70mm came from. The highest I heard was 50mm (Ulrich said to the warden near the end). But anyway, what they didn't say was if all 70mm (or 50mm) paid $250. I imagine many some paid $250 for all three races while others paid $99 for viewing probably the 2nd and/or 3rd stages.

Besides, the film opened saying the US economy was in the toilet. So that 17.5bb that you calculated may not be worth the same as it is today.

And as you asked who's paying to watch? Could be all foreigners. Or a bunch of people in a bar watching for $1 each.

Pardon me for not hitting the shift key 7 years ago. But I thought it was clear we were talking about money not length.

"The Roman numeral M is often used to indicate one thousand, and MM is used to indicate one million. For example, an expense of $60,000 might appear as $60M. Sales of $3,000,000 might be written as $3MM. Internet advertisers are familiar with CPM which is the cost per thousand impressions."

"In Roman numerals, M represents 1,000. In accounting, the suffix MM is used to represent 1,000 thousands, which equals 1 million. When MM is used in this way, $150,000,000 is written as $150MM."

He only received $300 for the 120 hours because the company was bankrupt. I don't think it reflects the actual wages of the setting.

Well, the economy is shot, crime rate is up and is unemployment.

They referenced ancient Rome in the movie. Basically, the message is: the less bread, the more circuses.

You have eternity. I have only now.

reply

If that was possible, all that demand and spending would bring the government OUT of the economic disaster. Besides, if the economy was that bad, 17.5bil at that point would be worth just as much today. Inflation tends to be very very low during troughs in economics, just cuz demand is so low. It's probably just a goof from someone who doesn't know a single thing about economics. Hmm, maybe all the viewers were wealthy Chinese and Indians.

Yeah, the choice was to receive $300 cash now, or a cheque for the full amount owed, which would have bounced when they attempted to cash it at a bank.

They really didn't have much choice but to take the pitiful amount of cash offered. Just another reason they were all so angry.

Does anybody realize that in the society we live in now there are people who only make $300 for a couple weeks work, and NASCAR makes like $3 Billion a year?

NASCAR makes that off of selling T-shirts and sponsorships. Imagine if you had to pay $100 to watch it every week.

reply

OP,

i was thinking that same thing this morning watching the movie. That was funny. It was worth mentioning. I can't imagine 17 billion not being worth a lot reguardless of the economy.

reply

yeah, stop using your brain when watch movies like this and just enjoy the action

reply

Who cares about how much revenue the race made. It's just a movie. Turn off brain and watch movie, that's what I say.

Anyway, I just have finished watching it, and I have to say - it's a very good film (I don't know the original, so I can't compare them)

reply

Very good? REALLY? You sure you want to go with the assessment?

First Race had 46 million viewers, most probably paying $250
Third Race had 70 million viewers, so an extra 24 million paying $99

Assume the Second Race had around 58 million viewers (average of 46 & 70), for an extra 12 million paying $99

So the Gross Revenue was more like $15 to $16 billion.

Also—as noted by others—the #300 cash was only a small fraction of what the company owed him at the beginning.

As for the value of those dollars, who knows.

reply

Oh, OK. Only 15 to 16 billion. Now it's way more realistic.

reply

Just pointing out that it was over 10% less than 17.5 billion.

If the future dollar is worth close to the present dollar, than of course neither value is especially plausible for a society with what is noted as a collapsed economy.

However, if the future dollar is worth notably less, than who knows...

reply

Also 70 million viewers doesn't mean 70 million subscribers.

People probably pooled their money together and watched Death Race with a lot of people.

So we are really only talking about 20 million subscriptions at most.

In addition, the U.S government and penal system profited directly via taxes from Death Race, why do you think they allowed it to happen?

Prison systems are for profit organizations as we speak, so you can be sure Joan Allen paid off alot of politicians, judges to get her Death Race approved.

reply

You must also realise that just because the economy is in the toilet for some, doesn't mean it's like that for all. even in this current economic climate people are still making a profit. it only affects the people on the lower end of the scale. i'm also sure that it's not just the American audience that would watch this: you'd have some sort of international distribution rights

reply

Exactly, an international audience. And Death Race has no language or cultural barriers, everyone in the world loves this type of stuff.

And Allen just mentioned the money from subscriptions. Tv, video, dvd rights and merchandise profits must be huge.

With inflation, 250 is like 25 bucks today I'm betting.

reply

The economy today is in shambles as well but you still see malls packed with people spending money on useless crap, such as 500 dollar phones.
