I Bet They Got Back Together!

I never thought so before, BUT the last time I watched the film, they both got along, complemented each other, and they went through their post break up crap, and notice the twinkle in their eyes towards one another??? I can totally see it, they sort of saw how they were making mistakes at the end of their relationship, then they went their separate ways. Once they ran into one another, that spark seemed to be there to me. I am shocked as I never thought so before and this is one of my favorite films, but I see it this time...they may have a new beginning now that they have an equal understanding and have their stuff sorted out now!

Its funny because I would always watch this movie and assume they got back together but I caught it last night and now believe that they won't reconcile and that they don't need to reconcile. They learned what they needed to by being together and going through the breakup and its time to move on. From the beginning of the movie I thought that she needed to be with someone like the man from the art gallery who asked her out and she said that she had a boyfriend. They seemed to fit together better than she ever would with Gary. She and Gary simply didn't belong together and that could be why they fought so much because you can't fix what never worked in the first place. Still love the movie though!

When I first saw this movie I was in high school, and I thought at the end that they would get back together.

But I just finished watching it again tonight, almost 9 years later, and coming at relationships with a different perspective, I see now that the relationship ran its course, they learned from their mistakes, and they have moved on. They are just friends now.

When I was younger, the thought that they didn't get back together bothered me, and I rooted for their relationship to rekindle. Now, I understand that sometimes people just aren't meant to be together, and someone better is out there for both characters.

Life is short. Don't fight over lemons. Let people watch some tv and relax, dishes can wait a few minutes. Take life in stride; it's a marathon not a race.

I have to agree with you. I think they get back together, too. In fact, I'm certain of it, and I'll explain why.

I think we've all had at least one awkward chance meeting with an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend before. They are filled with friendly banter, maybe some compliments. "I like what you're done with your hair", or "you've lost some weight". And there's the "I'm doing good, how are you doing?" small talk that you may find sometimes from people who really have nothing left to say to each other.

But then Brooke ways something interesting. She's traveled the world. She's been to a lot of incredible places, and instead of gushing about the beauty of Paris, or the history of London, she says, after all of that, how "she realized how much she's missed home." She had a great job waiting for her, yes, and that was likely the meeting she was going to. And she has friends and family still in Chicago. But those friends and family could always travel to see her, and she could get a great job anywhere. She still felt anchored, and connected to Chicago. And in that chance meeting, I think she realized something. Watching the two of them interact, I think it's clear that there is still love there. We know that Gary is healthier, and happy. He's smoothed things over with Dennis at work, and their tour guide company has become a big success. But the tears in Brooke's eyes are not out of a recollection of things that ended badly. I think it's a realization that she in that instant remembered why she missed home so much. This wasn't the ending of Chasing Amy, another Joey Lauren Adams movie, coincidentally. Though there is still clearly love for Holden in Alyssa's heart, and likely always will be, she's moved on with her life. This is a very different scenario.

When they part ways at the end, they walk a little bit, Gary looks back. Brooke looks back. Gary smiles, and winks at her, and Brooke smiles. And it's not a "I'm glad he's happy" smile. It's a much more enthusiastic smile. Because after traveling the world, and experiencing what is out there, coming home to Chicago, and seeing Gary, has reminded her that she loved him. She knows now that he loves her, that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure he doesn't hurt her again, and now that relationship can have new life.

I just finished watching it again for probably the 80th time (love this movie) and I totally agree with you. Their talk is not the typical "small talk" that old boyfriend/girlfriends who will never get back together again have, the way they agree to meet up again isn't typical and they way they look back at each other isn't typical as well.

They definitely had it in them to get back together and make it work!

I loved this thread, what a great discussion! I see both points and I love this movie precisely for its ambiguity. I've always wondered if it was in the writers' minds that they did work it out after some time apart.

I think in this scenario there's every chance they could have worked it out. They fought a lot and the relationship split, but it wasn't because one partner was inherently bad or because they were toxic. Don't get me wrong, I empathised with Brooke more than Gary in most of the situations, but as she acknowledged, she was not innocent. Both of them handled the arguments badly, but it doesn't make either character bad.

I think sometimes people are bad for each other and their time together runs out, but I don't feel like it was the case for Gary and Brooke. I feel like their relationship was the kind that benefit from time apart and personal growth.

Nope. Exes are exes. The same things would go wrong eventually. It would be so lame if they got back together.

The hopeless romantic in us wants them to get back together, and definitely the writer wanted to leave that possibility open so that we leave with hope rather than sadness. But, honestly, if they were a real couple, getting back together would be the worst thing to do. They were both happy, and they looked happy, and said they were doing well. They both looked good too. The last thing they should do is go backwards. Their relationship was pretty toxic and they would probably fall right back into their old habits with each other.

This movie made a lot of money I can't believe they didn't make a sequel...

I doubt they ever got back together. It would make you feel all warm and fuzzy but I don't see it happening, they realized they are not that compatible.
