Underrated.....cult classic

I saw this last week on cable at a hotel in San Ysidro. Didn't think much until I came here and learned it was all pretty much true. Then it all hit me....how brilliant to cast Beto Cuevas the cult leader, Sean Astin as the brainwashed expat....great stuff. The part where Phil asked Randall about the pizzeria in San Antonio was especially chilling and made it seem all the more real.

Last Movies seen:

INLAND EMPIRE:9.55/10
Shooter:6.73/10
The Good Shepherd:7.89/10

Yeah man I completely agree, this really is one of the most underrated films. Very disturbing but definately a classic, and I don't think I'll be crossing the border anytime soon.

It's a good movie. I saw it for the first time tonight. But it was only by chance that I heard it even existed.

Thank you!!! It's about time somebody said it! I wholeheartedly agree!!! I've seen all the FrightFest films to date and this is DEFINITELY one of the best... if not THE BEST. First of all, the casting in this movie was perfect... everyone stood out and their characters were well defined... and Sean Austin was just icing on the cake... I mean, what a treat that was! And it's not like he took the part cuz he's hurting for money... he would have made millions off LOTR alone... so he obviously took the part cuz he WANTED to play that character... something different.

Secondly, the cinematography is AMAZING! The "shrooming" part obviously stands out... really gives the feeling of being on mushrooms... particularly the scene where Phil (Rider Stong) goes to the washroom and has his fist run in with the crazy bald guy... it doesn't end there though, the whole movie was beautifully shot.

And lastly... (I mentioned this on another post, but I'm gonna say it again here) Movies about ghosts, or zombies, or undead killers back for revenge, etc, etc, are fun and all, but they're just not scary... because at the end of the day you know it's all just bulls**t... it's us humans who are truly terrifying. Especially crazy, relentless, F'd up Mexicans who want to literally tear you apart and there's not a damn thing you can do about it... now that's some scary-ass sh*t! Then pile on top of that the fact that it is essentially a true story (and not like Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a "true story") and what you have is one INTENSE *beep* movie!

Great stuff!!!

P.S. Inland Empire is awesome! David Lynch rules! :o)

Completely agree about this. I saw this movie years ago now and it still sticks with me,is still one i recommend to others. just the idea there are some elements of truth to it. I think as a huge horror fan its one of my favourites and dont get the crap rating on here or the negativity. oh and the documentary on the disc was disturbing to say the least.

Yea this was excellent. It's not a pretty movie and certainly most people won't like it. But if you enjoy the genre this is good stuff. I had some minor issues: didn't care that much for the protagonists, and thought the dialogue struggled a couple times. The best part of this film to me are the villains. They are believable and genuinely scary, especially the main guy. Sean Astin was a surprise as this was a really strange career choice at the time, but he didn't hurt the movie at all. The fact that this sort of thing actually happened makes it even better. I will definitely be revisiting this movie some day.
