Favorite Agent Hotchner interactions

Since we are losing him, I thought it might help to compile a list of our favorite "Hotch" moments.

I re-watched the episode where the team came back from a case, and JJ was in the BAU room with little Henry. She explained that she wanted them all to have a good memory of that room. Derek asked to hold Henry, and Derek said that Henry was smiling at his uncle Derek. All the women chuckled and said "Gas".

JJ looked over at Hotch and said, "You're smiling", and Hotch said, "Gas".

can I pick more than one?:

Revelations, where Reid give the bible chapter and verse, and Hotch figures out immediately what Reid's trying to tell him. The rest of the team has that little confab in the cabin and Hotch asks them all what's his worst fault, and they answer honestly: you're a bully, you don't trust women as much as men, he himself says he has no sense of humour but they all agree that he would never not put the team first and that Reid wouldn't get the verse wrong unless he *meant* to. And they read the verse Reid cited and realise he's telling them he's in a cemetery. And at the end of that episode, we get another lovely Reid and Hotch moment, after Reid's been found, he hugs Hotch, who returns the hug and Reid says "I knew you'd understand," meaning both the bible verse clue and the fact that when he was forced to 'choose one to die' choosing Hotchner was because he KNEW Hotch would figure out the clue.

and, the rest of the episode was stupid as hell, but I adored the fist bump scene in the jet :) in Forever People

reply

You can pick as many as you like!

That was a touching moment when Reid said, "I knew you would understand". Those two episodes were really good; lots of profiling, the Reid flashbacks - they were classic episodes.

I have only seen the Forever People once, thankfully, but missed the fist bump - bummer!

Another favorite of mine - the scene where Hotch goes out in the rain to get a Darth Vader costume for Jack from Penelope's friend "Madame Bouvier". It was a wonderful little comic relief vignette, and Hotch got to smile and be a bit uncertain of how to behave.

From Tribe
Hotch, Reid and Gideon are in a classroom, the teacher is asking questions and getting children to answer, Reid is muttering the answers, before the kids answer, then the teacher asks one of the kids and Reid answers loudly, Hotch turns to him and says "Reid is your name Samuel?"

Homer: "Knightboat, the crime-solving boat."

reply

Same episode: When Hotch and the Indian officer are fighting the bad guys with knives, Hotch had to shoot one to save the Indian guy's life. The guy says to Hotch: "You just had to shoot someone, didn't you?"

reply

Gosh, I had forgotten that one, I'll have to dig out the DVD and re-watch.

I remember now that there were some other interactions with the Native American leader that were borderline bantering.

I remember another of the earlier episodes - Psychodrama? - where Hotch was talking to Garcia on the phone, and in response to her comments, he said, "Just keep it clean and don't call me 'honey'".

*laughs head off*

yep.
also once, after he got off the phone with her and looks at whatever team members were there (I don't remember who was offhand) and tosses off the line 'remind me to have her drug tested' I just lost it. They should've taken advantage of Thomas Gibson's comedic talents more often. I know, I know, it doesn't fit the Hotch character so much, but even he would bust out smile once in a while:
"Are you asking me out on a date?"
"I'm trying.....it's not going very well"

reply

'remind me to have her drug tested'

OMG, that was a good one - Garcia had just rattled off a bunch of info, on speakerphone, I think, somebody thanked her, and she said, "You're welcome, my fine, furry friends!"

The "remind me to have her drug tested" was a good one! I believe it was Reid and JJ in the room with him when he said that 

Like you said, TG does have good comedic timing and while if they used it too much, it wouldn't quite fit Hotch's character. But we got to see it every now and then and I think that made it more special since it wasn't an everyday occurrence.

reply

The Hotch/Reid fist bump will always be gold for me!!! But here are a few others:

-No Way Out II, Hotch profiles his whole team, and Strauss.

-House on Fire, Hotch returns to Quantico and Garcia tells him about trying to get into people's head is something she's not good at. But he thanks her for doing a good job and that she's an asset to the team.

-100, well...the whole damn episode, but specifcally how he told Jack to "work the case". He knew he couldn't save Haley, so he chose to save Jack.

-JJ, Hotch is apprehensive to let JJ go, knowing 1) she didn't want to leave and 2) she's important to the team. He even told her he's not replacing her and will try to get her back.

-Mr Scratch Mr Scratch Mr Scratch!!!

I love trolls, they taste like chicken.

reply

how he told Jack to "work the case". He knew he couldn't save Haley, so he chose to save Jack.

That one got me, too, along with his entry into the house, following the blood trail, seeing Haley dead, yet holding onto his focus, knowing The Reaper was still there. Then, after pulverizing Foyet, going back upstairs and holding Haley - I've lost my husband, not under those circumstances obviously, but the feelings are the same, and it gets me every time. So yeah, pretty much the whole damn episode.

His eulogy at her graveside service is equally moving.

In Mr. Scratch, when he has the sage, and Rossi says if it didn't work, he could give it back to Garcia. Just a hint of a smile. I forget which episode showed her waving it around her office!

Edit: I finally remembered (well, saw the episode) when Garcia was waving around the burning sage - Corazon!

I pretty much love all the ones everyone has already mentioned.

My list of ones mentioned so far:

1. The scene the OP mentioned when JJ brings Henry to the BAU and Morgan is holding him. JJ says Hotch is smiling and Hotch says "Gas" because all the women just teased Morgan that Henry was smiling because he had gas. I just thought it was a nice scene between JJ and Hotch and how the two parents stepped back to watch the team interact with the baby

2. When he tells Reid and JJ to "remind him to have Garcia drug tested"

3. The Hotch-Reid fist bump!

4. The Hotch-Reid hug in Revelations

5. When Reid gives misquotes the bible verse in Revelations and Hotch immediately picks up on it and then asks the team to tell him his worst qualities.

6. "Reid, is your name Samuel?" from The Tribe

7. When Hotch profiled the team in the season 2 finale

8. 100 when Hotch is saying goodbye to Haley and has Jack "work the case with him"

9. Hotch not wanting JJ to go and saying goodbye to her in JJ

Some that haven't been mentioned yet:

1. In season 6, when Garcia tries to take over media liaison after JJ left and she has a hard time, Hotch comes to talk to her in her office after and talks about how she turned in her resume on pink stationary. He says he knew at that moment that she was special and that he wouldn't want her to ever change who she is.

2. In the season 6 premiere when Morgan was complaining about Garcia not being professional, Hotch fires back and says "But she gets the job done". Not only was Hotch trying to calm Morgan down and get him back on track, but he also defended Garcia at the same time and I think deep down knew that Morgan of all people didn't dislike Garcia's personality.

3. Morgan and Hotch talking on the plane in "Scared to Death". When Morgan says he can't sleep, Hotch asks what's wrong, and then Morgan counters by asking what's wrong with Hotch. Hotch brings up the whole "we promised not profile each other" thing that they had agreed on a long time ago. Morgan then goes on about how they'll be fine without Gideon and then Morgan once again asks Hotch what's keeping him up and Hotch tells him that Haley left and he doesn't think she's coming back.

I just thought that was such a nice scene between Morgan and Hotch. They were both worried about each other and then Hotch opened up to Morgan. Morgan was the first one Hotch told about Haley leaving. I thought this was big especially since Morgan and Hotch weren't always on the same page or best buds. And I also think Morgan and Hotch were an underappreciated relationship on the show

4. Morgan and Hotch at the hospital with Morgan's son. Again, another nice scene between these two and Morgan says he finally understands what Hotch (and JJ and Rossi) have been talking about for all these years about being parents. And Hotch is so happy for Morgan and tells him about Jack and is playing with Hank's finger.

5. In season 9, when the team is at Rossi's favorite bar that is closing down, Hotch set it up so that Rossi would sing karaoke.
Hotch: "I don't believe that, uh, any of the members of this team have heard you sing."
Bar lady: "Next up is David Rossi."
Rossi: "That was intentional"
Hotch: "Next up is David Rossi"
Bar lady: "Dave, get your butt up here and sing us out already"
Hotch: "And, look, it's in your key."
Rossi: "Yeah, Q squared."

 We got to Hotch joking around and show that lighter side to him. And then when the team is up there being terrible singers, Hotch pulls out his phone and films them and is smiling.

Fun fact: I read somewhere that it was Thomas's idea to pull out the phone and film them because he said it was something that people would do in real life

6. When Reid is doing physics magic in season 2, and all the girls are gathered around him and the thing lands right in front of Hotch. All the girls freeze up and scatter and Hotch walks up to Reid and asks if Reid is doing physics magic and Reid replies yes. Hotch says "I thought we talked about this" and Reid apologizes and then Hotch tells him he's starting to get some distance with it and then Reid smiles and Hotch walks away smiling 

Yes most of the one mentioned the magic trick, the fist bump, telling Reid and JJ to remind him to get Garcia drug tested.
Telling Garcia he likes her the way she is on a couple of episodes including House on Fire( I saw that one last night)

Revelations - the whole episode including the hug with Reid.
When he shared an omelette with Garcia . I think he had some of the best scenes with Reid and Garcia ,

The end of Nelson's Sparrow when he and Rossi are talking about Gideon

reply

Oh yes the omelette scene with Garcia was amazing!

I need to make a list of Hotch's best interactions with each character!

reply

The end of Nelson's Sparrow when he and Rossi are talking about Gideon

The end of Nelson's Sparrow; yes, that was a great scene, talking about that sledding dare. Rossi was so sad about losing his colleagues, Reid had lost a father figure in Gideon, and now both Reid and Rossi will have another loss.

Poor Reid; he's lost Gideon, Morgan, and now Hotch. I know I started this thread to remember the good times, but I am still so angry that Gibson was treated so poorly.

Another good moment; when he and Prentis were talking alone on the jet about her finishing her therapy, and her "new relationship with a man named Sergio".
Hotch: Sergio?
Prentiss: He is the perfect man; he doesn't hog the covers and he poops in a box.
LOL, I'm a cat person, so that just made perfect sense to me!

Not only has Reid lost Gideon, Morgan and now Hotch, but his dad also left when he was a kid, his mom has schizophrenia and is showing the early signs of Alzheimer's, Blake left, Elle left, he thought Prentiss died, and then Prentiss left the team a second time (although she'll be back), and JJ left for a while as well.

Someone made a sad tumblr post about it:

reply

Oh, what a sad post... and he lost Maeve, too. I know there is a lot of dislike for that story arc, but Reid clutching that book and curling up on the couch... gets me every time.

I know this is OT, but I hope TPTB give Reid some closure, some reconciliation with his own father, someone that he can have a lasting, good relationship with. At least, show him with Morgan, or have him mention seeing Morgan and being an uncle to Morgan's son. Rossi has his 'new' family, but poor Reid is so alone.

Ugh, I can't believe I forgot Maeve! I'm pretty sure I mentioned her when I talked about everyone Reid has lost on one of the other boards I'm on.

I wasn't a huge fan of the story arc but I did feel bad for Reid. And they had a missed opportunity of having Reid and Hotch talk and bond over losing someone they love in a similar way.

I can't remember if it was on here, but I think since news broke of Jane Lynch returning people started saying that it's probably the show wrapping up Reid's story and many of the character's stories might be "wrapped up" this season in case it does end up being the final season.

reply

then when the team is up there being terrible singers, Hotch pulls out his phone and films them and is smiling.

Oh, I missed that! I'll have to find the episode and watch it again.

And, yes, the physics magic scene - priceless!

It sums up not only every character, and their dynamic, but also confirms how well Hotch knows his team and respects them and how good he is at his job.
There's a reason he's unit chief. I'm gonna miss him :(

Your post triggered another memory of a Hotch interaction with Gideon.

At the end of Psychodrama, season 2, he and Gideon are on the jet talking about the very disturbed unsub they had just apprehended. Hotch said, and I am paraphrasing here, who is to blame for his crimes; his mother? society? the prison system? all of it? none of it? Gideon shrugs and says, "You save one life; you save the world."

For all of Hotchner's profiling skills, his knowledge of his team and stoic, focused leadership, there is still that basic human revulsion at what these criminals do. It shows his basic goodness, why being a BAU agent isn't just what he does, it's who he is.

Everyone's mentioned a lot of great Hotch moments. I don't think these have been mentioned:

I like his sweeter moments with Jack e.g. when Jack dressed up as him for Halloween

I also like his protective, kick ass side like in "Minimal Loss" when Hotch just tells the officer to get off his crime scene. It's so awesome. Or in the episode where the kid in Alaska is shooting people and Hotch confronts the parents and yells "sit down and shut up"

I also like at the end of the season 4 bombing storyline, that even though Morgan and Hotch haven't been getting along they still drive home together, and Hotch tells Morgan that he trusts him with his life. Lovely moment.

And of course just "100" in general. Thomas was amazing throughout that whole episode, especially the final showdown with Foyet. Like others have mentioned, its such a pivotal moment, he has to stay on guard even though he's following his wife's blood trail up the stairs to her dead body, not knowing if his son could also be dead. So friggin intense! And the way Morgan has put his arms around him to stop him punching Foyet!!!!

I know people have talked a lot about Hotch & Reid moments (fist bumps, Revelations) but another moment I liked is after Maeve dies and Hotch tells Reid he didn't have to come back so soon that he could take all the time he needed. And Reid asked "how much time?"
It was a brief but important moment because out of everyone who understands what Reid went through losing Maeve right in front of him powerless to stop it, it's Hotch and his parallel situation with Haley.

reply

That is one of the sweetest, I agree!

That connection and look between Hotch and Reid is so significant.

Thanks for more great additions!

That whole episode was Thomas at his best. Megan wanted him to be a knight in shining armor, and though she doubted him and called him a whore, based on what that guy had said, in the end, he stayed with her as promised until the end, and made certain that her list was exposed.

Just a little trivia; the guy that she shot, that actor was Dirk Blocker, brother of Dan Blocker who starred on an old classic Western with Michael Landon... can't think of the series name at the moment.
