Will we see one more season after this?

At this point, having followed the show since Season 6 (Watched the first five on DVD in order), and everything that has happened since the Season 6 fiasco, will Season 12 be the end or will they aim for one more? Despite all the cast changes, I feel that they should all come together for the final three episodes of the show (With the exception of Jayne Atkinson's Erin Strauss and Mandy Patinkin's Jason Gideon, whose characters died in Seasons 8 and 10 respectively). Nicholas Brendon may be a possibility but I'm sure they could get them all together for the end of the show.

That leaves the following members and one extra*;

Thomas Gibson as Aaron Hotchner
Matthew Gray Gubler as Spencer Reid
AJ Cook as Jennifer Jarau
Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss
Shemar Moore as Derek Morgan
Esai Morales as Mateo Cruz
Lola Glaundi as Elle Greenaway
Rachel Nichols as Ashley Seaver
Kirsten Vagnsness as Penelope Garcia
Aisha Tyler as Tara Lewis
Jeanne Tripplehorn as Alex Blake
Adam Rodriguez as Luke Alvez
Joe Mantegna as David Rossi
Meta Golding as Jordan Todd
Jennifer Love Hewitt as Katherine Callahan
Nicholas Brendon as Kevin Lynch*
Male Characters to date - 7
Female Characters to date - 9

Everyone crosses his or her fingers for this show's ending after S12 now. That's for sure.

reply

It's strange, I had the nagging feeling that the show was about to end after season 6, with the Thirteenth Step fiasco.

reply

Of everyone on that list, the only one I don't remember is Jordan Todd. Was he in the 1st season Jeanne Tripplehorn was in (only season I've never gotten around to watching)?

Also, I remember Kevin but haven't seen him around in a long time. I assume he was either killed or written off and I don't remember it?

reply

Jordan Todd was actually a female who was briefly in season 4 to fill in for JJ/AJ while she was on maternity leave

reply

Oh, okay thanks for that. I think I remember who she is now. I completely forgot about when that happened.

reply

Nicolas Brendan (Kevin) was basically written off the show because of his legal troubles. He has a real problem with drugs and alcohol.

reply

If NCIS can last for 14 seasons.....I got a few breadcrumbs of hope for CM. LOL

reply

We probably will 'not' see Season 13...

CBS renewed CM this year only because of major concessions by ABC in licensing fees. And for the fact that they still made advertising money off the show.

At upfronts shows advertising rates are sold based on 'who' is starring in the show, it's longevity and its promise for good exposure to advertiser's products. That meant Thomas Gibson being on the show was instrumental in CBS setting those advertising rates.

Now if CBS can't produce the promises of ratings, exposure, and 'who' advertisers originally signed on because of (Thomas Gibson) they have to 'give back' to the advertiser's the 'loss'. This could cost CBS millions of dollars in advertising money.

I get that people have 'favorite' cast members. I do. But bottom line Thomas Gibson was the face of CM since pretty much day one. While Joe M. is older and has a longer career he has 'not' have the saleability of being in as many TV series as Thomas has, especially ones with the longevity that Thomas' series have run. Therefore Thomas being on the show is who advertisers were looking at being there when they negotiated ad prices. None of the other cast have the careers or exposure that Thomas has.

It's just numbers and dollars with advertisers.

Ad rates for TV shows occur through a very complicated formula. The networks do not independently set the rates, that is where ratings come into play.

Last year Criminal Mind's ad rate was $133,983 for each 30 second spot. This year the ad rate is $127,179, which is a 5% drop in rate. Between 2014 and 2015 there was a %2 drop.

Ad rates are not released at the upfronts, they are generally released the 3rd week of September. Here is the full chart, which was released this last week:

reply

Yes I know DD.....

But Ad rates are set by not only ratings but by who stars in each of the shows. Do you think NCIS would get the ad rates they do if Mark Harmon wasn't on the show?

Ratings for shows especially long time shows have as much to do about who stars on the shows as it does plotlines.... Long time fans who tune into a show expecting to see one actor/actress and are greeted with another whole contingent of different actor's or actresses is more likely to change the channel thus lessening the value of those ad spaces.

reply

I'm not disagreeing with you, but the ad rate is set by the following factors:

-total viewers (from previous season)
-18-49 viewers (from previous season)
-age skew (the ratio of 18-49 viewers to total viewers)
-affluent viewers (whether or not the show was among the top ten โ€œupscale series with highest indicesโ€)
-day of the week (when the show airs)
-network (where the show airs)
-timeslot (what time the show airs)
-scripted (whether the show is scripted or unscripted)
-DVR viewers (whether or not the show had one of the top twenty 18-49 demo increases due to DVR)

Ad rates are set for the year; however it doesn't mean that an advertiser is willing to spend that much for the entire season. Criminal Minds is in a difficult position, which is why they are trying to pad the cast with the hopes that TG won't affect advertisers being willing to purchase advertising.

One classic example in the Criminal Minds family is that CBS wasn't able to sell advertising to pay the cost of the show; therefore, they didn't give it a full order. If CM doesn't do well during the fall sweeps, it is entirely possible that it will see a shortened season.

reply

Ok. I think we're saying the same thing but in differing manors...

My guess is that a shortened season is entirely possible. I can't see how the actor's they've brought in can or will compensate for losing TG. Rodriquez, Brewster, Gupton are 'not' Lead material. If they were it would have happened already. Especially with Rodriquez when CBS could have used him to get another season out of CSI Miami after the Caruso negotiations fell through.

And Paget's pilot's and shows have done nothing short of fail. She also was simply supporting actress on the shows she's done. As you said elsewhere Gupton is known more for his orchestration then acting. In the acting department, he is more of a supporting actor than lead material.

I agree! ๐Ÿ‘

We already know they have cast and planned the first 13 episodes, what will be interesting to see is what happens with the back 9-11 episodes. The November Sweeps will tell a lot.

reply

You are right November Sweeps will be very very interesting.

CM's big problem now is This Weds is the whole JJ mess episode.... Then they have a week off... (people can stew about the episode and upcoming 'exit' of Hotch) then you have it back going into Nov... I haven't seen much that liked AR's acting in the show.. and I keep seeing negative about AT's role on the show too...

My thought is if CM isn't moved to Sunday at 10 to finish it's run....It gets a cut in episodes to 18...

CM tanking bad could also feasibly mean the end of CMBB and Code Black who don't do good in ratings and are also ABC owned shows.

Barb and Dude, I am so glad you both actually know what is going on behind the scenes, not the salacious stuff, but the actual numbers that make the show happen. Thanks for putting this information out there.

I second that emotion! Reading this thread has been an education. Thanks, both of you! ๎ง

Serious question: Is Thomas Gibson's name that big of a draw to the average viewer? The only reason I have personally ever heard of him, is because he was on Criminal Minds. (Yes, I know now he was previously on Dharma and Greg, but I didn't watch that). In fact, AJ Cook was the only person on the show I'd heard of when I started watch it because I had watched Higher Ground. So it was just the basic premise of the show that drew me in, the actors had nothing to do with it.

I feel like most CBS shows get their ratings from an audience that just enjoys procedurals and doesn't necessarily care about specific actors. It's such a big cast, I don't know if losing one person impacts the majority audience. The vocal majority on the internet is an incredibly small percentage of the actual audience.

I consider my parents kind of the average type of audience that watches most CBS shows...and they have no idea what is going on behind the scenes.

What were the ratings for the premiere like compared to the finale last season?

Unless I'm missing some new breakout hit on CBS, it seems like CM would have a good chance at another season if they maintain decent ratings...because I'm a procedural lover and I didn't take on one new show on CBS this year. With NCIS: LA being on Sundays now, I almost expect that to go before CM.

Which reminds me: Is CM Beyond Borders still a thing?

I know very little about advertising and episode ordering and how all that works. I don't dislike TG at all, I'm just saying his name on the cast list of a pilot wouldn't draw me in above the premise (no one on CM has that name power to me)

This is the most sensible post I read in this board in quite a while.

The ratings for the S12 premiere is just a tad higher than the S11 finale.

12x01 demo 1.9/6 viewers 8.92m
11x22 demo 1.8/6 viewers 8.84m

It's an ensemble and procedural show so I think the drop in viewers reflect more on the age of the show than the changing casts.

I hated it when Gideon left and then when they killed off his character
