It is life affirming because it demonstrates how nothing really matters in life but life itself. Near the end when they decide to make it out of the whale nishi outlines one of the main aspects of the film. He says something along the lines of
"See, it's not about success,
dying in the streets, who's better, who's not!
I just want to be a part of it!
I realized that even if I've no connections,
no talent, even if I'm one big loser,
I want to use my hands and feet to think
and move, to shape my own life!"
The way I see it their time spent in the whale was a sort of test that forced them to realize that there is no "meaning" to life. Just enjoy the journey.
