If you'll remember the lab was designed to show what happens when absolute zero took affect. In the beginning they were showing this to the executives and military. Within the lab there appeared to be 2 rooms.

Even if the lab was functioning at all, they still would have died because the atmosphere would have became a block of ice and they would have ran out of air and water. I am not sure how anything was functioning and for that matter you think the windows would have shattered due to the cold.

Too much bureaucracy impedes practical thought

IT'S MOSTLY LEFT UP TO THE VIEWER TO BE A SCIFI BUFF AND UNDERSTAND THAT THE LAB WAS USED FOR MAGNETIC FIELD RESEARCH SO THE WHOLE LAB WAS SHIELDED AGAINST MAGNETIC FIELDS. BUT BOTH ROOMS HAD TO BE SHIELDED SEPERATELY OR THE INITIAL TEST WOULD HAVE FROZEN EVERYONE IN THE LAB TOO. ANYBODY ELSE THINK PHILIP RESEMBLES RADAR FROM M.A.S.H. WITHOUT GLASSES?
