Actually, as is geologically evidenced, earth's magnetic fields of flux DO reverse or "flip" every 100,000 years or so...
This is proven by the magnetic characteristics of iron- (and other ferrous metals) bearing rocks and strata found in the earth's crust, so the "haters" who just wouldn't be happy if you hung 'em with a new rope have absolutely nothing to base negative comments on in this regard which are rooted in scientific fact.
Lighten up and enjoy entertainment for what it is... ENTERTAINMENT!
Otherwise, enroll in classes, and do your thesis on, subjects that will make you a recognized leader in your field of study.

WELL SAID! I REMEMBER READING YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS IN ELEMENTRY SCHOOL SOMETHING ABOUT AN ARCHAEOLOGY FIND SOMEWHERE IN AUSTRALIA WHERE THEY FOUND A PREHISTORIC FIRE PIT AND THE ROCKS SHOWED MAGNETIC EVIDENCE THAT IT USED TO BE LOCATED AT ONE OF THE POLES PROVING THAT THEY DO SHIFT FROM TIME TO TIME

As for it happening so fast and the effect it has, well, they do say in the movie how surprised they are and that they never expected this.
