Other Japanese films worth seeing

I am starting a thread to list some other Japanese films I feel are worth viewing:

Gozu - written by the same guy that wrote Tokyo Zonbi, lots of morbidness and great humour

Perfect Blue- this is a great anime thriller, the best murder thriller I ever saw, it challenges your perception just enough

Kairo (2001)- a great psychological horror movie of the Japanese mould

Dare mo shiranai- a Japanese mother abandons her children in Tokyo leaving them to fend themselves, leaving the oldest in charge

Ichi the Killer- the quiet man is a killer you cannot understand

Drive (2002) - hilarious comedy, so funny that even with subtitles it is my favorite comedy

I would like others to add some Japanese movies that they think are worth checking out.

You just have to add Audition to you list. Also A Tale of Two Sisters, Shutter, and Acacia, and Ju-on is good too.

reply

tale of two sisters isnt japanese, i take it you got it from tartan asia extreme? as most people mispercieve there films to mainly be japanese

reply

I didn't say it was. I was stating it was a good movie. Why does it bother you that I posted it? I'm sorry if it offended you, but I ended up watching that movie when I read a review for it on a website that dealt with japanese films. It's an asian film that I love, so once again I'm sorry if it offended you.

reply

didnt offend me in the slightest its just the topic was about japanese films thats all, no harm done lol

reply

I didn't find it to be off topic.

Paprika is one of the best animes I've seen (and it's by the guy who made Perfect Blue). Some beautiful imagery and lots of Phillip K Dick style mind funking.

Other than that - try "Meatball Machine" for full on crazy fun involving alien parasites using live humans as fighting 'robots', "Horrors of Malformed Men" for a gentle dream-like descent into madness, the "Lady Snowblood" series for female sword action, "The Lone Wolf and Cub" series and "Hanzo" trillogy for insane macho sex and sword fun.

In the Pinky Violence genre, "Sex and Fury" and "Female Yakuza: Inquisition and Torture" marrries titilation with sword and blood poetry very succesfully. My favourite of all though (bar the ouvre of Takashi Miike) would have to be....

"Terrifying Girl's High School: Lynch Law Classroom"

well the topic is "Re: Other Japanese films worth seeing " but if you dont then m'kay

big man japan - a fake documentary about super heroes and other things

Did you find that film from rslog.net listing it?

I have it burnt to a DVD with other movies but I noticed the subtitles were real bad. I downloaded better subtitles but I have to copy the files to my HD, put the movie on USB along with the better subtitles to watch it on my DVD player(which supports Divx and USB).

On your recommendation I think I will check it out.

I would recommend korean comedy 'I'm a cyborg, but it's ok'....cracking film

Ask me a question.....

I'd also put Visitor Q on that list, but like someone else said Takashi Miike is a given.

How about other Asian zombie movies? There's Bio Zombie and Versus..

Just for the record "A tale of two sisters" is korean. It is quite a common mistake but if you look on the back of dvd case and see the names of actors and the characters and the original language it is in, it is clearly korean. I used to make that mistake but I have seen enough movies from japan, thailand and korea to be able to tell the subtle yet quite obvious differences. But the mistake is quite an easy one to make, so don't worry, just watch foreign movies from anywhere. It's not from, the orient but "let the right one in", a swedish movie, yes, like ikea, swedish, hahahaha, kicks major ass!!!!!!!!

Also "Stacy" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368296/

suprised no ones mentioned kurosawa yet, or better yet Takeshi "beat" kitano's films, if you liked tokyo zombie i couldnt reccomend his films more. Zatoichi especially which features Tadanobu Asano (Fujio). Also:

Babycart series

Battle royale

You missed a couple important ones:

Fudoh: The Next Generations - My personal favorite Takashi Miike film, all I can say is that I HIGHLY recommend it, HIGHLY

Battle Royale - A class of Japanese students are sent to an island, given weapons, and forced to kill each other.... 'nuff said

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky - An amazing gore-fest, one of the bloodiest movies of all time, awesome awesome movie

Casshern - Visually amazing live action Anime, a great story too

Phone (Pon) - a great horror movie in the wake of The Ring

Suicide Club - A movie where we learn that you're not cool unless you commit suicide

Dead or Alive - A Miike classic, Greatest opening 10 minutes ever

Zebraman - A hilarious superhero comedy

Ley Lines - Another great Miike film and the final chapter in his black society trilogy

I really enjoyed Crows 0 it's a delinquent high school kung fu movie, with tons of goofy kung fu comedy, but instead of over the top fight choreography, it's all gritty brawls. Really fun stuff.

I would also suggest Shark Skin Man Peach Hip Girl, it also stars Tadanobu Asano, and is hilarious.

And the Vengeance Trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) they're a bunch of incredibly Korean films. Mr. Vengeance specifically is breathtaking.

1.. 2.. 3.. 4.. 5.. 6.. 7.. Oswald was a fag.
