Is Sahrukh Khan the only Bollywood main actor?

I looked up some Bollywood films in an film brochure and what was amazing to me is that S. Khan acts in almost every(!) film.
I mean hasn´t India any other good looking and talented actors?

It were the same as if in almost every Hollywood film you would see Brad Pitt or anyone like him. It is so retarded.

reply

There are plenty of good actors, alot of them better than Shah Rukh Khan. The thing is that Shah Rukh Khan is the most popular overseas. One distributor was once quoted as saying 'if you draw up a list of the most popular Indian actors overseas, Shah RUkh Khan would take the top 3 spaces.'

But other actors:

- Amitabh Bachchan (less now so, but is still very very widely regarded as the biggest superstar and best actor in the history of Indian cinema)
- Aamir Khan, my personal favourite actor. He has a smaller fan base than Shah Rukh Khan, but thats probably more because his films generally don't have as much mass appeal.
- Hrithik Roshan

Those are probably all the biggest ones. There are alot more, but in terms of popularity I think that pretty much covers it.

Dont know if you want a list of actresses or not, so I'll leave it for now.

Thank you Sanity,
I would appreciate a list of actresses.
I know one actor from your list: Amitabh Bachchan. I saw him in a 70´s film but I don´t know the title anymore.

Best wishes

Okay then, a few actresses:

- Aishwarya Rai - heading towards Hollywood. Not a brilliant actress, but she has given some good performances such as Hum DIl De Chuke Sanam and Raincoat

- Rani Mukherjee - pretty widely thought of as the best actress in the industry right now.

- Preity Zinta - popular actress, majority of her roles are bubble gum/ cnady floss movies I think

Theres more, I'll post them when I think of them. But those are the 3 most prominent ones right now.

Oh my god ! These girls look so beautiful. I have to watch some movies with them.
Can you recommend any films? But no bubble-gum-girl films please.

Up to know I watched only one film from India. I don´t know the title anymore. It was with S. Kahn and Rani(?). He owned a truckage company and feel in love with her. Any idea?

Cheers

The film you are referring to is Chalte Chalte.

Some films you might like:

Aishwarya Rai:

- Devdas - This film I would only recommend purely for aesthetic reasons. Aishwarya looks very very good in it, but the film itself, I didnt like much.
- Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
- Taal
- Raincoat - something very stunning about the simplicity of her look

Rani:

- Paheli (have you already seen it, seeing as its the board you are posting on?)
- Black - very well made film
- Saathiya

Preity Zinta:

- Mostly have been very bubble gum films, but Dil Se is a very good film.

Other films:

- Main Hoon Na - Sushmita Sen is looking very very sensuous
- Maine Pyar Krun Kiya - bad film, but see note I made for Main Hoon Na

Other names you might want to check out, but they dont really have any great body of work so whatever film you see expect a crappy film:

- Lara Dutta
- Bipasha Basu
- Amrita Rao (also in Main Hoon Na)

try "veer zaara" (shahrukh + rani + preity zinta - not a bubble gum film) and "lagaan" (aamir khan)

reply

Check out Dhoom 2 (just for the eye candy).

Some movies I love (most of which have at least one of the actors/actresses mentioned) include Kal Ho Naa Ho, Lakshya, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...

Kajol is also a great actress in my opinion. She's often in movies with Shahrukh and Rani, including KKKG. Another movie that she's in that wasn't as good but I still enjoyed was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Aishwarya Rai is the best actress. Her movies Taal, Raincoat Devdas, Mistress of Spices were great performances. She is the best actress in Bollywood. And Aamir Khan is the best actor. I don't think there's anyone else who is better at acting than him. Sunny Deol could be; he's one of my favorites.

Sunny Deol has also given tour de force performances in films such as Ghayal, Ghatak, Gadar and The Hero.

reply

Aishwarya Rai is incredibly beautiful, but cannot act. Nice to look at, yes, but it's not like her face changes whatever is going on.

My personal favourites are Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. They are both so very talented, and perfectly imperfect. What I mean is, they don't have the typical 'Bollywood'/'Hollywood' look. They are both very unique individualists. And Madhuri's dancing is always a joy to watch. I am a dancer, and such performances always attract my attention.

My name is Gillian, by the way. I'm using my sister's account. :o)

While she hasn't done movies in a while, I'd still consider Kajol within the top 5 or so.

salman khan is a big one too ;)

amrita rao is gorgeous

SRK is number uno in Bollywood right now. Bollywood is a very star-centric industry and whose star shines the most is also in most of the top films. That doesn't mean there aren't other stars, it just happens to be that thanks to his looks, talent and on-screen charisma, Shahrukh Khan is the most popular star at the moment.

Other stars whose projects I follow keenly:

Amitabh Bachchan - Huge in the 70's, still respected and working hard.
Saif Ali Khan - Good comedy actor, also does dramatic roles well.
Aamir Khan - One of the Khans that ruled the 90's, very talented actor.
Salman Khan - Also a Khan of the 90's, still does a good job.
Abhishek Bachchan - Amitabh's son, a new rising star who'll probably gain more success as he does more films.
Vivek Oberoi - This guy has never blown me away but he's still pretty damn popular.

As for females:

Rani Mukherji - My favourite out of the current working actresses.
Preity Zinta - Total cutiepie, lovely actress.
Kareena Kapoor - Some hate her, some love her. I'm pretty indifferent myself.
Kajol - Huge star in the 90's, a famous pair with Shahrukh, retired but is now making a comeback with a 2006 film Fanaah.
Aishwarya Rai - The most beautiful star today, IMO.
Juhi Chawla - You saw her in Paheli, she's really lovable in her 90's films.
Urmila Matondkar - Some people dislike her but she's done some excellent roles, too and is very pretty in my opinion. See Ek Hasina Thi, for example.

So as you see, Shahrukh Khan is the most popular star but definitely not the only one.

reply

S Khan is not the only actor defintley - my personal feeling is that he gets the main credit for movies where there were other leads who did just as a good job as he did - Salman Khan is in my mind.

As for actresses, my favourite has to be Kajol - she's so beautiful and did 5 successful movies (all with shahrukh) but it seems that shahrukh got the significant part of the popularity, even though Kajol was pretty much the other half of his movies.

Rani is another of my favourite actresses but her crying scenes aren't as persuasive as Kajol. As for Aishwarya Rai's context, I have only watched Devadas and Mohobbatein but already I do not see her as a great actress - her range is very very limited, playing only little girl/cute roles or stunning and sexy, like in Shabd. I see her as a Indian version of Angelina Jolie.

reply

there arne't many actors in indian cinema, its actors faces that sell most movies, the stories are mostly secondary. unlike hollywood it doesn't matter whose in it most of the time, but what the stories impact is.

reply

Barsaat is also a great movie, with very good songs.

But the #1 film remains Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... You have to see that one.

I haven't seen Devdas yet because I keep buying the film with French subtitles. I will probably get a English or Dutch version soon. Is it a good movie?

Kal Ho Naa Ho was really sad.

My favourite male actors:
Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Amitabh Bachchan.
My favourite female actrices:
Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Amrita Rao, Yaya Bachchan.

By the way, has anyone seen Asoka?

reply

Yeah i have seen Asoka and i wouldn't recommend it even though SRK and Kareena Kapoor are in it.

reply

RANI MUKERJI ALL THE WAY....GO RANI!!!!!U ROCK GIRL

reply

ASOKA -- I beg to differ, although it shows a simplified life of the emperor who has even left his trace on the Indian national flag, it looks very slick and has some good dance numbers; my favourite being the infinitely sad Roshni se, beautifully choreographed. I own this DVD and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. As for Kareena, how many actresses do you know these days who are willing to star in a film without wearing make-up, tatoos aside? Good on you, girl!

reply

Kareena thinks too much of her herself.Plus she comse up witht he silliest insults ever! Take for example the time she told famous director Bhansali of Devdas and Black fame that he didn't no how to make a movie! Thats the stupidest thing you could possibly say!!!

reply

While I think Kareena is a frivolous person who needs an attitude adjustment, I'm going to give her a bit of credit with that insult. Devdas (2002) and Black (2005) are really overblown films. They just get a lot of attention because they don't have the typical sappy, sugar-coated, convuluted love triangle themes of most popular Bollywood films. I mean, can you really compare SRK's fake-crying and Aish's constant state of bewilderment to the original 1955 film with Dilip Kumar?

reply

yeah and another reason devdas is overblown is because of all the hype related to the fact that the director shelled out a fortune for it..so naturally everyone would want to go see what he spent it on

reply

Its not that there are no other actors in India but its sad that people rush to the theatre to watch ANY SRK movie, thats why stupid movies like Main Hoon Na and KANK are such box office hits. As they say, only SRK and sex sells in Bollywood.

reply

LOL! Vetch ji - Main Hoon Naa is only stupid to people who do not get its cheeky tongue in cheek humor. But it cannot be appreciated as the first BW movie one watches. You have to see enough to know what is being spoofed.

I love Main Hoon Na, for me its a guaranteed laugh every time, plus Shahru is quite the honey in it! However, it was on TV here the other night, a friend of mine caught some of it and she thought it was terrible. I think she thought it was Bollywood's attempt at The Matrix ! Personally I think I would have liked it even if I didn't understand the cheeky aspect of the film. . .

You guys are forgetting NANA PATEKAR! hes india's Method Actor..Kinda like Deniro, Pacino, Nicholas Cage, Leonardo Dicaprio, Dustin Hoffman, But nana has his own style nowone can copy. Great movies of his are PARINDA, WAJOOD, YESHWANT, AB TAK CHAPPAN, KRANTIVEER, SHAKTI: the power!

Also Check out Sanjay Dutt, a great actor and a great film to watch of his is VASTAAV. Its pure down to the dirt Gangster Flick for india, and it's Original!

Also checkout Sholay, India's Spagetti Western, basically the birth of the contemporary action genre for india! It's basically India's "THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY" ...but its original..it has nothing to do with the Eastwood Movie.

And if u wanna go alittle bit further back...but stay in Contemporary Film, Watch ZANJEER,...this film was the birth of THE ANGRY YOUNG MAN in indian Cinema!! A great one to be exact....and made AMITABH BACHCHAN A SENSATION!

reply

Anyone like Swades? I didn't see it mentioned here. I thought it was decent myself.
