I felt sorry for Uchida

I really like the film but it was sad when he lost his girlfriend, the Geisha girl Ayako in the Hiroshima atom bomb, yet it never showed her later in the film only Taeko who also sadly died.

Well the flashbacks were mostly told through the memories of Kamio who thought Uchida had gone down with the ship.

Which is probably why despite living for another 60 years we don't see any of Uchida's life post Yamato and only hear about it briefly through his daughter's words.

Thats true but also when Kamio says on the boat to the others that 'like Uchida's girl from the Hiroshima Bomb' (thats the how it's worded on the subtitles) hhe must have meant she died like Taeko did, he could be wrong of course but Uchida's foster daughter never denies it, but of course she could be wrong too, but I get the feeling that's what the film wants us to believe, that she died because of the bomb.

Indeed, while the subtitles are a little vague he does say that Uchida's woman also died in the Hiroshima bombing.
