U.S. Release?

I wonder if they'll release it in the states?

You, me, and every WWII enthusiast/historian in the country want this to happen!

The website is here: http://www.yamato-movie.jp/top/index.html.

The email link is here: [email protected] Write the studio and ask for a stateside release. If enough of us do, who knows? Remember -this was JUST released in Japan on the 17th - it'll be a few months/up to a year before we can hope to see it in the US.

Let's hope. The trailer is awesome, and the story (if you've read the books on which the film is based) is an excellent read.

Cheers!

I went and watched this movie lastnight (in Japan of course). It was very very good, and very emotional--even though I could only understand about half of what was said. The focus of the movie, however, is not so much on the battleship Yamato as it is her crew. The story is told ala Titanic through the storytelling of an old man who was a survivor from the Yamato and most of the story happens in Japan and not on the ship. Although, the two major action sequences that do occur on the Yamato are phenomenal. Also, Nakamura Shishidou, who plays one of the main characters, Uchida, (was also Dragon in Ping-Pong) is great and is becoming one of my favorite Japanese actors.

The title of the book is also "Otoko-tachi no Yamato".
The author is a female novelist Jun Henmi.
But I don't think an English version is available now.

The video is being released in the USA by DVDasian.com. It is being released on 9/18. You will need a Multi region player since it is in region 3 coding.

That is not what most people mean by a USA release. We mean released here in Region 1, distributed by a US company so it can be bought anywhere. What you are describing is a company selling a non-USA release here in the USA.

reply

That's hardly a US release if it's in a different region code.

what more do you want ?

hardly economical to produce a special version

I've yet to see it anywhere on stateside shelves, but I sure would like to. In the NOVA special on the sinking of the Yamato, one of the Japanese historians noted how fascinating the ship and its history can become to anyone with so much as a passing interest. Let me tell you, he wasn't kidding! I'd love to see this film some time.

I know this thread is old, but I just bought a region-free DVD from HKFlix.com for $10. It is a Malaysian DVD. English subs, widescreen, trailers, cut scenes, a full-on release and robust DVD.

I'm kind of a Luddite about the techno-jargon on DVD's, but does "region free" mean it will play on most any standard DVD player? I find this topic fascinating as well.

Yes, region free means it will play on a standard dvd player. When shopping for Asian DVDs, always confirm the DVD is NTSC and Region Free, or Region 0, or Region 1 ... But if it was region 1, it would not be an "Asian disc" now would it? (It would be a North American release.)

Best of luck to you.
