why was this so acclaimed?

Just watched it on DVD for first time expecting a Dark Knight type masterpiece and am completely baffled. Why did critics give it such great reviews? Its clearly an average superhero movie - the acting (Pine ok), the FX, and the origin story you got to admit is abit ridiculous even for a superhero film, .. yet it got hailed a modern masterpiece almost. yet its like an inferior version of Thor meets Captain America 1 (seem to remember that wasn't as acclaimed as this..and was deemed pretty average at the time in 2011 and just did ok box office)

And it made huge box office bigger than all the DCU bar BvS..

reply

Maybe because it's so much better than the other DCEU fare?

reply

because its a good movie

reply

Mainly because it's good and the lead actress ROCKS.

reply

I dunno, I just watched the second one and Gal Gadot was pretty flat and boring.

People got their current year goggles on. Nobody's gonna like this movie 20 years from now. It was the right movie at the right time, it doesn't matter if it's good or not.

reply

It was one of the best DC films ever made. Gal Gadot did a good job at playing Wonder Woman. Unlike Zack Synder's DC films, this was dark and gritty done right in order to capture the atmosphere of World War I, and Wonder Woman represented hope and optimism to counterbalance that.

There was some flaws such as the weak climax, but the first two-thirds of the film were so great that the climax doesn't really detract from it.

I thought it was cartoonish and made a mockery of WWI. I went in with low expectations since I am not a fan of any of the superhero, comic book movies. There must be some sociological force going on right now that is driving the popularity of this genre. Insert your pet theory for that here:

Why? because it's a movie about a strong woman that was directed by a woman. We live in an era where we have to put women on a pedestal otherwise you're a misogynist and threatened by women. It's sad people can't differentiate between equality and special treatment.

reply

It's a quality film, though.

I especially enjoy the first half of the movie. The second half I like a little bit less, but it's still quite a well-made film overall and probably the best movie in the current DCEU.

It was really melodramatic and overdone, including the swelling music throughout which was very distracting. Acting from Diana's mother was terrible, like the actress knew it was an overwrought piece of garbage. About the only thing I liked was the little British secretary woman--more of her please. Yeah not a fan.

ETA i was a little harsh on this film in retrospect. I liked Chris Pine and the twist with Aries at the end. Overall not bad.

reply

It has nice comedic moments, I think the secretary was very well casted. This movie is a good blend of fantasy/history/action, the tone and pacing is spot on. It isn't great but it is the best DC has done. Man of Steel in comparison had really bad tone and pacing, it was too slow and dark.

reply

Please, tell us specific examples of where it was overdone and melodramatic, beyond the bounds they are accepted and expected of myth. Really. I freaking mean it. You don’t find Gilgamesh and The Odyssey “overdone and melodramatic”? That’s what LARGER THAN LIFE IS! It’s overdone and melodramatic. Was the dialogue of the movie script inferior to Homer? Yes! It was! Prose is inferior to poetry! Was the narrative inferior? I think not, and I stand by what I think. Defend your post. All you’ve offered so far are sweeping and unsubstantiated statements.

reply

Ok I take it all back, it wasn't bad actually. lol
