I would have believed more had Gwendoline Christie played her. Over six feet tall, about 150lbs..... That's a true Amazonian woman. That would have made this film far, far more on the track to being a better film.

reply

[deleted]

Diana Prince is Caucasian. Christie would have been the better choice because she can act and she can also look like a pretty damn good fighter. Just look at her scenes in "Game of Thrones" with Rory McCann as The Hound.

reply

yeah, like bruce lee, or Jet Li or jackie chan, all of them are so strong and big and muscular ... even Iko Uwais ... he is SOOO BIG AND STRONG ... 5'5" tall, soo big :D

reply

[deleted]

My comment was in response to how the super heroes need to be super muscular and heavy weight to be taken seriously. Those mentioned although in great shape are far from the "hulk smash" superhero type that was promoted by the OP (professional wrestler?).

it's funny that you mention Gal Gadot trainer in the list of people that have a different way of looking at fitness and strength. Plus she served in the israeli military as a combat trainer - "she revealed that the grueling physical training she underwent prior to filming wasn't nearly as demanding as what she experienced as an army officer."

Btw, i do hope you realize the difference in physical aspect between the same person before and after 2h of gym or effort?

[deleted]

Did you skip this while reading? it was on your quote:

"at least bulk her up like a professional wrestler".

Wanna compare a male professional wrestler like the rock to Iko? Can you see the difference between the rock and iko? Want to say that iko doesn't fit in The Raid because he is not as muscular as the rock?

Who said she was an officer?

And btw, if you talk about ignorance maybe you should try and see how muscular WW was in the original comics. She wasn't. And neither was Linda Carter.

[deleted]

And i said that in order to be athletic a person does NOT need to be bulked up. I can find pictures of tennis players that are NOT muscular, for example. And i gave you examples of individuals that are not bulked up like wrestlers and are believable as action figures.

That was a quote from another source. But in some countries you can be an officer after a short training if you had a college degree before joining. Maybe it's the same for israeli forces.

Unbelievable for you maybe. But it is canon. So maybe it was more important to respect canon than having a female hulk as the character.

does he look buffed to you? I would say that he is far from a strong, bulked up physique.

reply

[deleted]

Ffs, read again what you quoted: "every ... action hero has a strong physique ... at least bulk her up like a professional wrestler"

Not sure who has problems with reading comprehension: action hero. ACTION hero. Iko Uwais IS an action hero without looking like a wrestler.

"Action hero: The archetypal action hero or heroine is the protagonist of an action film or other entertainment which portrays action and adventure."

reply

[deleted]

Again, most of those are far from the wrestler archetype ... they more look like regular guys that go to gym 3 times a week. And there are plenty of action stars that don't look like that - Bruce Willis being one of them - even Mel Gibson in Mad Max is far from the picture you posted. So NOT EVERY male action hero is pumped.

i hope you do know the biologically it's impossible for women to look like Arnold or the Rock.

reply

[deleted]

I agree with your premise. It's weird how in many movies and tv shows they use petite women (usually brunettes) but give them the strength and fighting ability of a large man. You see one of these 90lb women roundhouse kick a 200lb man and he goes flying but in real life he would go, "ouch, quit that," and keep about his business. It is setting an unrealistic body standard for women. If they wanted to make real female role models, the women would appear physically capable.

reply

[deleted]

First of all, Gal Gadot did weight training. She's in really good shape. She's not super buff, but most women can't beef up the way guys can.

Secondly, not all movie superheroes are beefy. The Spider-Man actors have all been pretty thin. Iron Man isn't all that buff, either. While, Chris Pratt shed some of the weight he had for Parks and Rec, which gave him a set of abs, it ended up being his decision as James Gunn was okay with him looking like a normal dude.

reply

[deleted]

[deleted]

If by "buff", you mean they hit the gym, then yes, they hit the gym. So did Gal Gadot. I wouldn't say that Robert Downey Jr is a big guy, nor would I say that about any of the other guys mentioned. They're just fit. You put RDJ next to the Rock, Arnie, Vin Diesel or the other big guys you named in one of your above posts and tell me he's anywhere close to them in pure size.

And yes, you posted pictures of four women who have beefed up. One of those women is a pro wrestler, which is an industry that has been known to `roid up its performers. Another was a female body builder, who often use testosterone or other legal enhancers. There's not much that's natural there. Now, the producers of Wonder Woman could have used a woman with the build of the tennis player or the martial artist, but how good do you think their acting would be?

reply

[deleted]

I read it and my point still stands. Very few actors bulk up like pro wrestlers.

reply

[deleted]

At that point, it's a matter of perspective since I don't think she looks weak.

reply

[deleted]

Well, if you compare a fit woman to a fit man, the man will look bigger. Men have far more muscle mass than women on average. Aside from that, Chris Hemsworth is a larger than average man even before working out.

You brought up tennis players before, although you brought up Venus Williams who is a rare woman in that she has bulging muscles. Let's look at some others:

Anna Kournikova
http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/151015180200-anna-kournikova-1998-super-169.jpg

Maria Sharpinova
http://www.itv-india.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Maria-Sharapova-vs-Christina-McHale.jpg

Chris Evert (people used to joke she was really manish too)
http://dailydsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/20151221-2-evert.jpg

None of these women look any more or less muscular than Gal Gadot.

reply

[deleted]

So why is it that Thor, who is a god, has to have big giant muscles, but Wonder Woman, who is a goddess, doesn't? If muscles don't matter, then why not have the guy in the below link play Thor? His muscles are as big as Gal Gadot.

https://www.muscleonthedouble.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Skinny-Man.jpg

Because he looks puny for a man.

Gadot doesn't look puny for a woman.

You seem to not understand that men are generally larger than women.

reply

[deleted]

You also brought up a female martial artist earlier, so let's look at a few.

Michelle Yeoh
http://images.mid-day.com/images/2015/may/12Michelle-Yeoh-1.jpg

Cynthia Rothrock (a martial artist and female body builder, btw)

Li Fei

Let's look at female stunt women:

Zoe Bell

Debbie Evans:

This is Gal Gadot's stunt woman:
http://i.imgbox.com/eIu4bsYq.jpg

Out of all these women Rothrock is the only one who looks bigger than Gadot by any visible margin and even then, she's super skinny when compared to Robert Downey Jr or Christian Bale.

[deleted]

That's pretty disrespectful to the women mentioned above who have trained their whole lives to be at the top of their fields. The tennis players I posted are all very famous tennis players who have won major tournies. The martial artists I mentioned have all had their own films and are celebrated in their fields. Even some of the stuntwomen I posted about are very famous. Zoe Bell is quite possibly the most famous stuntwoman in modern times, if not ever, thanks to Quentin Tarantino.

The woman you posted is one in a million. She is a very unique woman and I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't had testosterone injections or other enhancers. That aside, how good of an actress is she? After all, we are talking about movies and acting ability is key above all else.

Keep in mind, as big as Chris Hemsworth is, he isn't nearly as big as John Cena or any other pro-wrestlers. Does that mean John Cena would be better at playing Thor than Chris Hemsworth?

reply

[deleted]

You're really defensive when people point out how silly your statements are.

reply

[deleted]

I, too, thought that she should have looked more athletic. Not "bulked up" with huge muscles--but lean and sinewy, with better muscle definition. The two older Amazon women had more of that look than she did. Other than that, she did a great job with the character.

reply

And some men, and some women for that matter however rare, capable of being strong without strong body weight and muscles and whatnot?

reply

because bare handed lifting a tank would suddenly become believable, if she had muscles?
lol...numbnuts

reply

Exactly. There are strong men and bodybuilders more muscular than Superman, but they can't lift smart cars over head. The strength that Wonder Woman possesses in this film transcends any achievable level of muscle mass: it's super-human. Dinosaurs weren't this strong.

reply

Saw it again today.

Noticed that they only time that Diana seemed as thin as, well Gal Gadot, was in the modern-day sequences in Paris. Apparently during the bulk of the film, clever costuming and camera angles were used to make Gadot look as much like an Amazon as possible. That was a nice touch.

reply

The longest thread in this movie's discussion board is about Wonder Woman's body....

It's amusing... Things change, yet they stay the same... 😂

reply

Maybe because human body is part of her acting, actors play with their body, especially in this film. Acting is to be convincing, everything is part of it. I completely understand the point of this thread why she might be a bad actress for this film for some people. It just shows a certain message the movie creates, in 20 years from now perhaps Wonder Woman is going to have more muscle definition. These things are extremely important, they reflect the society, how we perceive the power, etc. Nowadays it reflects sexism, perceiving things for how attractive they are, instead of how believable they are, it reveals beautifully the obvious psychology of society, that sexism exists in those who fight against it the most = where attention goes the energy goes. James Cameron kind of mentioned this a bit recently too. So easily they could have found a less physically appealing woman, but they chose a model, all these decisions, it is all part of the message supporting sexism, from the filmmakers' view sometimes unintentional, because as the saying goes, what we fight is what we become. When we look into the past, many action heroes or superheroes were not always so attractive, that includes men, actually plain looking, almost ugly in many eyes, but it was not as important, people realized that the body language was part of their acting by being convincing.

reply

I understand your points...

I was referring to the irony in that the movie was marketed as a representation of female empowerment, yet most people are arguing about Gadot's body... Whether she's hot or not, fit or not, she remains objectified...

Whereas in Alien, Ripley appears her underwear and is even shot sensually, yet no one talks about her as an object... The discussion boards of that movie are not dominated by discussions of her body... Her character is much more empowered because she doesn't need to represent anything or be held to any particular standard, she simply is... Yet Alien was never marketed as anything but a space thriller/horror... A B-movie, with an A-movie budget.

Funny...

reply

It would be the same if they had a guy playing Batman or Superman who didn't look athletic (they augment this for contemporary actors in those roles with plastic muscles incorporated in their costumes). I thought Gadot was great as Wonder Woman. I realize that some of the character's strength is supernatural, but I also think that someone who runs, jumps, climbs, lifts, and engages in hand-to-hand combat nearly every day would probably look a bit physically tougher than she does. No matter, though, it doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the movie and her performance.
