Yeah I made a comment about this too. Apparently to be a powerful independent woman you have to be a skinny pretty tall model like white chick......how, inspiring......

Pretty odd even for these days, with the whole body positive movement. We still get the same casting. White models....

It's societies fault really. Women are first and foremost seen as here only to please men. Michael Bay movies are the best example. The only women that exist are hot women. The studios are looking to make money, that ever important young male demographic. But wait can't men just go online if they want to 'view' women? It really makes no sense really.

Mostly just stacking the deck pretty actors/cgi/explosions/existing fan base/tie in movies.......

Also lmao they did a 'behind the scenes' feature where they showed her 'training' LOL and she's like 'they made me so strong'. When she does the whole wrist bracelet blocking thing it looks like her arms will break! Like to be as skinny as she is you must avoid at all costs bulking up. Muscle does that.

I agree with you she looks totally out of place. When I watch the movie it will be an unintentional comedy as she in no way can be this character, ah well. Watching her will be like watching a cripple on chemo and crutches fight off all the bad guys, while a bunch of buff built men stand around and cower. LOL I am a comedy fan! It will be like Twilight all over again!

You sound pretty racist.

So true, how dare they portrait a greek european female as white ... and worse, not obese ...

Stupidity is so strong these days ...

reply

True, just like female cops on tv, most are far too skinny to be believable, for example, A.J. Cook on Criminal Minds and Grace Park on Hawaii Five O. They look about 100 lbs and yet they easily beat up guys built like Dwayne Johnson, so unrealistic. It would be laughable if men as skinny as Woody Allen or Joseph Gordon Levitt played cops so why don't they have more realistic female cops?

So basically what you're saying is "Wah! Wah! She's more attractive than me! Wah!"

reply

take a day off, bro

reply

I look at it this way: If I could end up loving a Wolverine who's over six feet tall, there's a chance I could buy a skinny Wonder Woman.

IF the actress is good enough, as Jackman is so good it doesn't matter that he's a foot taller than the character. And that's a big "if" with Gadot, because her English doesn't seem that great.

reply

[deleted]

It's than. Not then. And if you think Rhonda rousey or Serena Williams looks like Wonder Woman you are blind as well as grammatically challenged. Another moron who has never opened a comic book

reply

Be that as it may, it's called source material for a reason.

reply

Yeah, but Wonder Woman isn't strong because she spends all day working out and taking steroids like real-life athletes, she's strong because she'd a demigoddess with Mystical Amazon Powers that aren't available to humans, no matter how hard they try. They're going to have to play it that way on the movie and it'll probably work, because if your CGI and world-building is good enough you can give a mosquito Mystical Amazon Powers and the audience will believe it can throw minivans around.

Too bad, because I really do like physically powerful women, and I'd really like to see one on the screen. Even if the actress got that way by taking the same steroids as her male counterparts.

reply

So, she didn't work out and exercise while growing up on the island? Superman doesn't get strength from muscles either but he has them because he is supposed to represent a physical ideal. Unfortunately, Hollywood thinks the female physical ideal is an undernourished waif. Which, btw, is not how WW looks in the comics.

reply

I LOVE how WW looks in the comics, both curvy and muscular! Too bad Hollywood doesn't appreciate either curves or muscles on women.

But regarding working out, IMHO WW gets her strength and immortality from her demigoddessness, but got her skill from all that training. She's not so strong that she can just march into a battle and laser-eye everyone while the bullets bounce off, she needs to hone her reflexes and learn strategy, she needs smarts as well as strength.

reply

The physical ideal for women does not include pronounced musculature, except for people with a weird fetish.

>Unfortunately, Hollywood thinks the female physical ideal is an undernourished waif.

Gal Gadot wasn't even remotely "undernourished" looking in this movie. She had a normal female build, pretty much the same as Lynda Carter had when she played the same role. She didn't look anorexic like a lot of "super models" do.

>Which, btw, is not how WW looks in the comics.

This is the original Wonder Woman from 1942 - https://d1466nnw0ex81e.cloudfront.net/n_iv/600/741923.jpg

And this is from 1975; she's still built like a normal woman - https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e3/ba/62/e3ba627347ce1bf69fecf801f871f635.jpg

reply

Sadly I've seen her in other movies and she can't act her way out of a paper bag.

reply

The big difference is Wolverine being tall doesn't make the character any less credible. It makes him different from the comics character but it doesn't make him look ridiculous.

And no, Gadot is not as good as Jackman, or really as anyone (and that's including Chris Pine who looks like Oscar material just standing next to her, and that's saying a lot). Unfortunately her accent is not her biggest problem. The scene where her aunt dies is laughable and I'm pretty sure that's not what they were aiming at.

reply

This can't be a real
Question. The answer is obviously because men created the characters. Men like skinny women and strong men. If women created a comic character that was all butch that would be their right. This can't be a serious question. It's a troll trying to start a feminism argument. So sick of this type of garbage. It's ruining everything. The New York Times just bashed dave chapelle because he doesn't toe the politically correct ultra feminist line. It's amazing how this sickness has infested even dorks on a movie board

"tow the line."

Isn't it to "toe the line", though?

reply

You're quite correct:

""Toe the line" is an idiomatic expression meaning either to conform to a rule or standard, or to stand poised at the starting line in a footrace. Other phrases which were once used in the early 1800s and have the same meaning were toe the mark and toe the plank." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toe_the_line

Also, there's a recent comic I discovered called FAITH, which is unique because not only is it about a reluctant female superhero, but she's also a big woman ( about a size 10 or 12,maybe) who flies around in a cape and keeps her heroine identity secret a big secret la Superman. It's actually funny, and thoughtful, especially when she and her boyfriend attend a comic-con and have to stop some people doing some dastardly deeds during it. The author (for her name) is also a woman, so that clearly made a difference, because a male author would have written Faith as yet another typical skinny-as-hell size 2 character.

reply

Benjobuff:
No, it's true, and bringing up the subject of lead actresses in Hollywood being too skinny is a fact. The reality is, it's still mostly men who control Hollywood, and who still think a woman is attractive only if she's a size 2 toothpick type (apparently, any woman over a size eight who actually looks strong enough to take care of herself threatens them in some way, lol.) And that issue's been addressed for years now. So it's not "garbage",or a feminist argument. It's real,it's a damn fact of life and women in real life are pressured by society's definition of attractiveness to browbeat themselves into a small 4 size anything--that's why it's an issue, and it's very real. Obviously you're a man, and since men don't have to bend over backwards like women have always had to do to fit or contort themselves into society's latest definition of what is currently deemed "hot" or attractive (which changes every couple of years, anyway) you obviously don't think it's a big deal. Just because it isn't to you, that sure dosen't mean that it isn't to us women, because it's always been made an issue for us.

My wife works out for hours everyday and she is miserable. I tell her let's go get a pizza and she yells at me that it has too many calories. So I feel no pity for you morons. You do it to yourselves. No one is stopping you from creating your own heavy set female superhero. I'm pretty sure gal gadot is happy but who knows. In my experience women have all the power and they are consistently miserable just existing, no matter what size they are

reply

The ultra skinny female body type is not considered attractive by many men, so this trend being pushed for "waifness" is counter-intuitive for that reason as well as being unhelpful by creating social pressure on women.

The depictions of Greek Amazon legend as well as that of the movie fiction of Wonder Woman suggest a fit physique with ample upper body proportions.

reply

Men don't all "like skinny women". And we are not talking about making WW curvy (although as an Amazon, she definitely should have more curve), we are talking about how ridiculous she looks when she is training and how her total lack of muscle tone makes her completely wrong for the part.

reply

I don't remember Wonder Woman having big muscles in the comics though. I guess if it bothers you that's your problem. I don't care she has no muscle. Neither did she-RA. Why would anyone want to watch a woman with big muscles?

reply

"Strong" can mean a lot of different things. You don't sound like you know anything at all about fighting. Big size and big muscles do not at all necessarily mean the ability to fight. Fighting is a combination of skill and spirit. Bruce Lee weighed like 160, but he was ripped, shredded, fast as hell and had a passionate spirit. Michelle Yeoh is anything but bulky, but she's the First Lady of martial art. Force = mass x speed. If you are smaller than your opponent, accelerate faster. In SvB, Gal Gadot had more intensity, focus, and balls than Superman and Batman combined. You need to broaden your understanding of what a hero truly is.

Case in point: Based on size and punching power, George Foreman should have creamed Muhammad Ali. He fucking did not.

reply

Good points! I would add that among the Amazons, the emphasis was on Diana's skill, speed, and intelligence, rather than her brute power. Looking at photos of modern heptathletes, they're probably somewhere inbetween the slender Gal Gadot and the hulking Serena Williams, but neither is an unrealistic depiction of WW.

And let's not forget, WW's power comes from magic, not just muscles. All the bulk in the world won't let a person lift a tank or knock Doomsday back, that requires superhuman (or even super-Amazon) strength.

reply

Thank you, and I really like your user-name. Richard Boone rocked! THAT is a show that should be rebooted.

reply

Ali weighed four pounds less than Foreman when they fought (216 vs 220 lb). He wasn't a toothpick. The fact that boxing has weight classes pretty much disproves your point.

reply

landofree:
Because that's simply male comic artists' fantasy version of what they think a strong man should look like---with lots of muscles and larger than life. Just like the stick thin female characters they often draw are their idealized versions of what their fantasy women look like.

reply

[deleted]

I don't see stick thin female characters in comics. I see women with curves and, yes, with muscles when I look at female superheroes in comics. But the artsy fartsy, often gay, men running Hollywood think men want women to look like walking skeleton runway models. Those people, men and women, running Hollywood are wrong.

reply

That's not true at all. I grew up reading comics and I can tell you that women usually have more muscle than poor Gadot does. Most of them now also look like they have fake boobs for some reason (mostly because the men who draw comics have grown reading comics and have not been in contact with many real boobs before the idea was planted in their brain that boobs looked like overinflated balloons) but they definitely don't have arms and legs that look like breadsticks
