Can someone explain the ending?

I don't understand how her going into the light with her bf in her unconscious state, down St. Rosemary's corridor, led her to believe she loved him and had to die in real life? Why did she have to die b/c she loved him?

TY for your interpretation. :)

YOu are a retard to not mention this is a SPOILER and as such should be blacklisted.

Here's how I see the ending. As she said the whole thing from the "first" accident scene to the second one was a test. She was hit badly in the accident and since she murdered her father and she was supposes to go to hell. However, she was given out a second chance, a test, in which she can prove she's worthy of heaven. She did prove that by risking everything to save Nick. She was therefore sent to heaven.

The only unclear question was why did Nick ask her "are you sure" before they left St. Rosemary. It sounds like she knew at that point it was a test, which kind of defeat the purpose of the test and therefore doesn't make makes sense. What could she have would said? "Oh, I've changed my mind, let stay here, in hell, with all the demons"? I didn't get that part.

Well he should be, he ran a stop sign and says in the movie that he has "wrecked another car". Nick killed her with his lousy driving; this was one of my greatest fears when I first started driving, not paying attention and getting someone killed in my car. As I drove with different kids I realized I was in the minority, others thought we were invincible and drove like maniacs. I know I was that way because I had been in an accident where I was almost killed (and yes, the person driving was being stupid, we were hit by a train). I was a wild man in every other way, but when it came to driving I was as careful as a bomb technician.

I think that when someone asks for an explanation for the ending of a movie in the title of their post, that is a perfect spoiler alert. If you could not figure that one out yourself, you, sir, are the retard.

Last film: The Hidden Fortress 8/10

I think your the idiot sir! look at the title for this talkback .Can someone explain the ending? It,s quite obviuos that there will be spoilers !

reply

I'm think the title was pretty darn good at letting you know that there will be a spoiler in this thread. They asked to have the ending explained to them- and if someone clicked that not expecting to get a spoiler, there's really no hope of protecting them from spoilers in the first place.

You are a retard for not figuring out a thread titled "Can someone explain the ending?" will not involve SPOILERS!! Next time THINK before you say something stupid.

I know this thread is old but I just ran into this movie and was wondering what other people thought and saw this gem of a comment and couldn't help myself.

The title of the thread is "Can someone explain the ending?" It kind of goes without saying that the thread contains spoilers.

Here's my own interpretation.

To start off, there was nothing to indicate she had to die because she loved him. Just that she loves him and must die now.

My interpreation is that these two things are correlated due to her past. In the beginning of the movie, she obviously runs away from commitment and Nick say that she does this frequently and her father is the cause of it.

Thus the only way she could truly love him and appreciate this love is for her to confront her past with her father, otherwise that one aspect of her life will always hold her back from truly loving him.

Since she couldn't confront her past on her own, however, she had to confront it through a near death experience. Unfortunately, it didn't seem as if she was able to settle her past but she was able to confront it by making her love for Nick take higher priority. So while the scars of her past are still there, she was still able to "pass the test" simply because she finally made it so that her current life (with Nick) took a front seat to her past issues (with her father), which she was unable to do so before.

So why did she have to die? She didn't. I believe the case was that her "angel guardian" allowed her to confront her past and solidified her present as a last wish before she died.

To put it simply, she didn't have to die because she loved Nick. Perhaps she had to die before she appreciated how much she loved him.

---The tolerance of storyline inconsistency is why we have so many bad movies today.

Local Doctor, you are over complicating it. She was supposed to die since she fatally injured in a car crash. She was then given a test/last change to proven she was worthy of heaven and not hell because of the murder she committed when she was 12. That's it. Her love to Nick has nothing to do with it per se. Just a test.

Kul - I loved your interpretation; it made perfect sense to me.

Thanks. I just thought of a another cinematic equivalent to Amy's test. John Constantine (from the movie "Constantine") was also supposed to go to hell due to the suicide attempt he committed when was a teenager. However, due to his personal sacrifice in the end of the movie (in order to save Isabel from hell) he saved himself and "bought" a ticket into heaven.

only problem i have with this movie is that i think she ain't that guilty for killing her father. the father is the one to blame, he sort of made her do it

reply

I agree; that was a hell of a thing for a father to even suggest to his daughter. "End my life and live with it forever. Or until living with it drives you to a miserable suicide." I'm surprised how well-adjusted she turned out, fear of hospitals her only neurosis.

I agree with this one, And I think that Nick being the one to take her out of the hospital and into the light in the end was simply because her goal for being in the hospital was to save him, and she wasn't going to leave without him. I think that someone was sort of speaking through him to ask her if she was sure. I also think that that question wasn't referring to - "do you want to stay here?" but more like asking if she was ready to accept her fate after leaving that place, knowing that she would die. I think it's more like "are you sure (you're ready)"

reply

I thought it was pretty obvious what happened in the end, she was supposed to go to hell for killing her father, the kid was her guardian angel so she gave her a chance to redeem herself, which she did by saving Nick.

reply

i'm not sure if she was to go to hell for killing her father, or just had to face and deal with the guilt for what she felt was murder, when it was in fact an attempt at mercy. a child of 12 can't see the big picture, and since it didn't go as planned, she lived with the guilt of not being able to help her father. the scene with her father showed him as a selfish miserable guy, and i feel she was living with more guilt than sin.
