I found this movie

I found this movie because I was researching Quinceaneras on the net because I have been invited to one a on May 17th. The girl having hers is the daughter of one of my good friends. I am white non hispanic and honestly have never heard of this.

I found the movie very interesting and talked to my friend about it. Her brother is gay and she says the hate of gays in her community is a huge problem. Her brother has been disowned by her parents but she has told them he will be at the celebration and they have their choice of going or not. If they hate their son more than they love their granddaughter that's their own problem.

And if they go and say or do anything they will be out of their lives for good and never see their grandchildren again.

Is it true the stigma against gays is heavier in the spanish community than otherwise?

It is true, but it doesn't have to do as much with Latino culture as it does with the degree of religiosity associated with the culture. The heavy influence of Roman Catholicism in Latin American countries has led to very heavy social conservatism in Latino communities. It creates interesting dynamics here in California where older Latino populations tend to have very liberal views on immigration policies and bilingual education but very conservative views on things like gay marriage and abortion.

The strong influence of Catholicism is really odd when you stop to consider that it was not even introduced to Latin America until about 600 years ago with the conquistadors. The religion that to this day so strongly governs the lives of millions of families that they will actually turn their back on their own family members (as in your account here as well as was portrayed in the film albeit with bad acting) was in fact a European import.
