I think the movie was horribly unauthentic.
their accents come and go.
sometimes they would say "tio" sometimes they say "uncle." I don't think i've ever heard a mexican family flip-flop between those before.
I really disliked the acting.
and nobody wears their shirts buttoned all they way up anymore (like Carlos).
way too stereotypical.
the movie could have been so much better.
From a Mexican-American standpoint, it was just a poor effort the way it dealt with such large issues. She's abandoned by her boyfriend and how can we tell how frustrated she is just by only having a scene with her deleting her boyfriends pictures on her cell phone. I felt it was weak all around.

Don't get me wrong, the movie has its flaws, but that's being picky.
Wow. Thanks for speaking my mind on this film for me. I agree with everything you're saying. It never felt real to me. I had trouble buying most of it.

i thought the acting was really wooden. i'm guessing that there aren't many unknown latino actors and they needed a lot for this movie, but they weren't very good.

Absolutely agree with everything you said. Hard to believe that it was filmed in L.A. and they couldn't manage to find an actor who could portray a young gay Latino. instead they cast this good-looking guy from Wyoming who was completely unconvincing.
I was also bothered by the fact that she was celebrated for having conceived without penetration. Yeah, it happens. But, you have to be in a pretty slutty position to allow for the possibility. Why was she suddenly all pure and holy once they found out her hymen hadn't been broken?
The thing that was least realistic though, was the fact that this 200-year-old great uncle spoke ENGLISH at home to his niece and nephew who were clearly fluent in Spanish. What? NEVER. I live in L.A. Trust me on this.
I think like in anything that isn't "mainstream" the quality is at its best, but that aside I really think this move was well done given the resources. I thought the acting was great and maybe they hired a bad stylist that didn't think outside the box, but overall the cast did great.

I did have a problem with them coming around so quickly because her hymen was intact, but its an indie film. How much film and time did they have a budget for? And its not like they didn't address that exact idea (the immaculate conception not mattering to her father) during the film.
