I guess it's possible, but he seems like he would have just been straightforward and shared that with Carlos, especially since he must have known how alone Carlos was feeling. My gut instinct is that he was not gay. He seemed to be very honest and the stories of the girls in Mexico were probably true. I think he just was a good guy who did not believe in judging others. That is why both Carlos and Magdalena end up living with him. He accepts them unconditionally. When he refers to Carlos' special friend, I think he is just letting him know that he accepts his choices and thinks it is good for Carlos if he has founds someone who he can relate to and connect with.
Sometimes an idea is so bad that it starts to be good again.
