Had to stop watching

I'm not homophobic. But the gay cholo is just unrealistic. If a gang member were gay, there's no way he'd go to a gay party right there in his neighborhood. He'd keep that life in seclusion, and far, far away from his gang habitat. After all, he could be killed for it. It's too bad, because this film had a lot of potential. Up to the point where the two gay guys sit next to the cholo at their party and pretty much reveal that they're gay (which is where I stopped watching, because in reality the cholo is throwing punches and making a run for it, at that point), this film was actually rather realistic. The rest of the characters and the setting were real. The openly gay cholo was just a bit too radical, though. At this point, the film attempts to merge the topic of culture in LA's Echo Park neighborhood with gay fantasy soft core porn. I'm not saying the same hasn't been done regarding heterosexual fantasy, but in either case it corrupts the true story of the film.

I don't think he's homophobic. He's just telling it how it is. I admit that I don't know much about gang culture, but I'm guessing that having a gay guy in the neighborhood wouldn't be taken well. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

It's all supervised!

The original post is incorrect. There is a strong gay culture among the macho Mexicans of Los Angeles. There is at least one hugely popular gay bar exclusively for them in Echo Park, where the film is set. Certainly they are not in the mainstream, but the film is an accurate description of real life there, not a fantasy Hollywood version of macho culture.

Sure, Magdalena says he's a thief & a liar, but Carlos seems a lot more of a lone wolf. You never see him with guys his age, period. He's too isolated to be a gang banger. Yeah he flashes what appears a gang sign, but aside from that why would you think he's in a gang?

I would say the fact that RobSac stopped watching at the seduction scene pretty much guarantees he is homophobic. Carlos already knew he was gay and what he was getting into. There was no reason for him to run. You just did not want to see any more homo activity. As a gay person I have no problem watching hetero love scenes in films. I never go...oh my, this is too much, I can't watch anymore.

Carlos is not a gang member. As someone has pointed out in this thread, he's more of a lone wolf. He may be a thief and a hoodrat and a troublemaker, but he does all this alone.

Troll the respawn, Jeremy.
