PS2 Autosave Screen Error, PLEASE HELP!

I turn on path of neo on my playstation 2.. it goes through all the screens in the beginning and ends up showing a big red pill and words talking about it being the autosave screen and when it comes up to not turn off the ps2 or remove the memory card.. fair enough..

below the red pill are words that say "Press X button to continue"..

So I press the X button and nothing happens. The game isn't frozen or anything, its just like its not recognizing me pressing X..

I tested multiple controllers and even tried them on different games and the X button works perfectly fine... What gives?!
