batman.......

Have you seen the director's website? The movies he makes seem less indie than most Troma films...... This guarantees to diapoint, and it appears that they are making a movie based on " The Girl Next Door" (the book not the already made movie) which, if you have read it, would make a pretty messed up movie.

Bring out the gimp

reply

Chris Sivertson doesn't have an official website. And this is his first feature (except All Cheerleaders Die, which he codirected), so I don't see how you can make any general statements about "the movies he makes."

reply

yea I wonder how they'll handle the ending of this movie, it gets pretty extreme at times, but ketchum is gonna be at a horror convention this october I'll see if he knows when this movie is gonna be released and if there's any updates...anyone know how long its been in production?

reply

It's just played at recent festivals and will be having screenings next month for cast, crew, distributers. Shouldn't be too long before everyone can see it either via theater or dvd. Keeping fingers crossed for the first.

reply

could this be it...?

No.

reply

Actually this movie did have an official website till it was picked up by Anchor Bay, and Sivertson is part of a film maker website that has info on him.

That said, this movie SUCKS! What happened to getting good performances from actors?

reply

The movie is based on the book by Jack Ketchum The Lost. It is about a crazy A** hole who decides to shoot two girls camping in the woods because he thinks they are gay, And how all that spin out of control with trying to keep his ass covered and keeping his friends quiet. The Girl Next Door book is about these two sisters who are forced to live with a distant family member after their parents die, And the woman goes nuts and keeps the older girl locked up in the basement and tortures her. Very F*#KED up.

Just caught it at SXSW in Austin and although a dark and disturbing story, I felt it was a great film!

reply

i was in an unenthusiastic mood when i went into the cinema, and i wasn't enthused for the first half hour. but as a whole package, yeah, its pretty exceptional. i really dont know if you could class it as a horror.. at least in the general modern sense.
the way it just built and built, was so skillfully executed, and milked every drop of tension, that it was worthy of hitchcock.
but yeah.. it felt a little exploitative.. it had the impact that something like Audition tries but fails to achieve.. in a good way.
and even though what you actually see isnt as extreme as plenty of things out there, i left with no doubt that it was the most disturbing thing i'd ever seen.
so yeah.. as an unconventional horror, definately one of the best.

heh, and surprisingly, only one couple left during the last manson-esque sequence.

reply

Sorry I'm just catching up here. I posted about the screening coming up at ScreamFest and realized I hadn't posted in awhile.

I saw the film at SXSW and was blown away by it. Yes, there was a lot of violence and it was pretty shocking. But I was somewhat prepared for it. Well, no, maybe not. Hehe. But I could handle it, and the people I was with were not put off by it either. The audience loved it and most stayed for the Q&A, which is unusual.

If you're into horror/slasher flicks, it will definitely be up your alley. What I loved the most is that, like the best horror films, it's got a wicked sense of humor. There are some great laughs between the sickness, and the story is very very real. It's not like they took blood and gore and visual effects and shoehorned a plot into it. The script is compelling, and the violence is crucial to it.

Mark Senter is so good it's frightening. Literally. Alex Frost plays the puppydog as well as any actor out there, and I smiled whenever he was onscreen. Everyone was real -- nobody walked through this one. It was truly a labor of love and it shows.

A powerful film.

reply

And you would be... Alex Frost, playing the role of Tim Bess
in... this movie? The movie that you are hyping as possibly
being the greatest of its genre. Ever.

Am I right here, BadMIstaFrosty?

reply

good movie better then most high budget stuff not to say that it looks low budget it looks good the acting was ok, but this movie really caught me off guard i did not think it would be worth the rent but it was a good surprise it kept me watching and interested.

so far it is the least horror inducing piece of *beep* ive ever seen. go watch IT for pure horror. it isnt even what my friends told me to be disturbing. this movie is NOTHIING.

reply

its a half wit attempt at making "the rules of attraction" scary. it's just plain NOTHING. the LOST is a perfect statement of where and when the filmakers decided to make a movie. from a LOST idea, and into a lost CONNECTION. this movie is both NOT scary and NOT enticing in the least. terrible. and i'm a huge cult afficionade.

reply

Can you believe this garbage was a highly anticipated release from numerous horror sites?

reply

This is a real horror movie - not some blood bath gore fest - the low budget atmospheric mood gave it a sense of realism that not many movies can attain and it led up to a disturbing unforgetable climax that was too real, and that should be appreciated. Go and watch Hostel 2 if you don't like it

reply

Oh, yeah this is real horror. You must be very young. Because anyone with any taste for horror (you can put Hostel 2 where the sun don't shine. The first Hostel sucked bad enough to skip Part 2) knows that The Lost was a terrible script, poorly acted. Great Horror movies are films like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer.

reply

i have plenty a taste for horror and i was being sarcastic about hostel 2 saying it sucked and i agree with the classics and TCM and I havent see Henry but want to - im just saying this was different, maybe you have to read the book to feel the effect of the movie idk though - i surely did

reply

Sorry, didn't get the sarcasm.

It was different, it was bad. It was bad film making. There was no suspense, no character development, and some really terrible dialogue. Someone here mentioned that quite a bit of the dialogue came straight from the book, and that's beyond amateurish. A screenwriter takes the book and interprets it into the medium of film. A book can take hundreds upon hundreds of pages to tell a story, a movie basically has two hours or less. You can't fit everything on screen in that amount of time, so you condense and create a new work from the characters and plot of the book.

There was also mention that the book details more intricate characters then the movie. So that means if you haven't read the book you're not going to completely understand the movie. Which says the film-maker did a pretty lousy job.

But, most importantly and I've already mentioned this. If you dislike a movie, why in the world would you go out and read the book?

reply

I guess that's why dude you have to get the book first and then appreciate the movie, i hear you there though in terms of it being tough the other way around - i can see why you may not have appreciated the movie. It *was* pretty low budget, I just thought it was a new set up in terms of the whole leading up to the climax thing which isn't done too well or often enough these days and I did think it was disturbing to that extent especially in the end.

reply

The last book I read was Charles Manson's autobiography.

reply

bet that's sick lol

reply

Actually, and I think I've posted this somewhere else, liking to book has NOTHING to do with liking the steaming pile of a movie. I LOVED this book. I LOVE Jack Ketchum. The director tried to make this movie exactly like the book and and while it is almost a shot for shot remake of the book he failed somewhere along the line. The guy that played Ray was ridiculous - almost like a cartoon character. Tim and Jenn were both dead behind the eyes. The girl that played Katherine was pretty good. This movie was just poorly cast and while I feel that the director did what he did out of love for the book, the cast needed to be better familiar with the source material.

yes - this is it. well spotted. it will sadly be overlooked by many but this is it!

reply

What was well spotted, overlooked???

reply

I will say this - it is one of the best horror films of 2008 for sure.
Although it was made in 2005 :)

reply

No, it wasn't. I loved the book but the movie was disjointed and not well constructed. Large portions of the book were left out and there was no character development. To be honest I think I would have been completely lost watching the movie if I hadn't read the book first.

reply

It's late. Sitting here wishing I owned a copy, since it was burned into my mind back when me n the wife saw it 2 months ago. Too tired to write. Short n sweet.......YES!!!!!! BEST HORROR/SLASHER/ACTION/COMEDY/ROMANCE/ROMANTIC COMEDY/MYSTERY MOVIE EVER MADE!!!!! Turned me onto Boris too. FURI one of my favorite songs now!!!! One of those films that keeps you tense throughout & at thee end...sitting there with your mouth wide open(literally). CAN'T WAIT FOR DIRECTORS NEW WORK & SAME GOES FOR MARC TOO AS HE BLEW ME AWAY & TOTALLY STOOD HEAD N SHOULDERS ABOVE EVERYONE MAKING THIS FILM ENTIRELY HIS. I BELIEVE HIS PERFORMANCE WAS ONE OF THEE MOST ORIGINAL & ENTERTAINING CHARACTER STUDIES EVER IN FILM!!!! BOLD...YES!!!...BUT HEARTFELT & EXTREMELY HONEST...I SHALL NOW GO TO BED HUMMING THE PIED PIPER AS ALWAYS. THAT SAID, ALONG W/BLUE VELVET I DON'T THINK ANY SONG IN THE HISTORY OF FILM HAS EVER AFFECTED ME THE WAY PIED PIPER DID IN THE LOST

reply

Just watched this movie.....I'm an old jaded movie watcher who's pushin' 50 & you know what....this was quite good....the guy that played Ray has incredible potential & I noticed another poster who thought he was a spit of Crispin Glover another underrated actor .I predict a bright acting career for this young man.

reply

With proper direction, he could be quite good. It didn't help that he had to act against a dismal script.

Absolutely true. But, in this case, no palliative. "The Lost" is a poor script beyond the dialogue.
