Why did she drag her daughter along? Bad mother.

She effectively risked her daughter's life by taking her along on her dangerous journey for justice/atonement.

Can anyone find any justification for this? It's the one thing that seriously bugs me about the film and makes me NOT have sympathy for her.

Who said that you need to have sympathy for her? Anyway, her daughter wanted to come. Geum-ja Lee did not want her to come, but the daughter insisted upon it. We see that part stylized, with the daughter keeping a knife at her throat in front of her adoptive parents.

Even if that wouldn't be the case, parents do not always follow the most logical path in their actions. That only happens in Hollywood, not in real life. You see this kind of randomness in a lot of foreign movies because it makes sense. Sometimes you just need to sit back and enjoy the movie. Not everything have an explanation or a sense.

You need to watch more Hollywood films then. I'm a foreigner who loves Hollywood films, people who bash Hollywood are often surface watchers with a limited palette. If all you watch are marvel and transformer films, the fault lies with you, not Hollywood. Tgf is the greatest film of all time and I have yet to see a korean film to match it.

2nd you are supposed to empathize and sympathize with the protagonist, no matter how bad they are. If you cannot evoke that empathy from viewers then that is the fault of the film. I also agree with the op, including the daughter makes me lose any empathy for her. They are not westerners who bend at every whim or temper tantrum of a child, you do not risk your child's life when you plan on going on a killing spree. And bad parents not putting the welfare of the child over their own actions is seen in Hollywood, ex. Running on Empty. A film where the parents are unlikable as well.
